I am working on a 76 v w is getting spark but it still wont fire.not even with starting fluid.after trying to start it several times the spark plug was still dry.the fuel line has gas in it but didnt seem too pressurised.i think it might be fuel injected because i dont see a float bowl.could it be the fuel pump?

hi .thanks for checking this out.i guess the moter is a newer porshe moter. it is fuel injected.the bus has been sitting for a couple years. i undid one fuel line .there wasnt a hole lot of pressure, but the gas smelled like it was still good.the spark plugs were getting spark.i used allmost a whole can of starter fluid and got absolutly nothing .there was some hose that the sf had to go through though.after crankimg on it for a long time the plugs were still dry.some one told me to try turning the key off and on several times helps for fuel injection.i havent tried it yet.should there be alot of fuel pressure?

Yes, it could be the fuel pump, but there are alot of things to be worked out first. Where is the vehicle getting spark? If it's out of the coil lead that's a good start, but it needs to be worked out if the spark is getting to the spark plug leads through the distributor cap, rotor & ignition lead, to the spark plug. Dry spark plugs after cranking for sometime can mean it may have no fuel getting to the cylinders. Must know from this point if it is Carby or Fuel injection. Carby will have the air filter housing in the middle of the engine (if standard carb set up) with plastic ducts going horizontally out to the tops of the carbs. If it's injected (standard) it will have the air filter housing on the driver's side of the engine bay with a large air pipe going from it, to a plenum in the centre top of the engine & four steel pipes (intake runners) going out to the cylinder heads.

Have you ever actually had this engine running yourself, even if it was two years ago?

If it has been running, have you done work on the vehicle since then?

If there is starter fluid getting to the spark plugs & they are OK then it should kick, try replacing the spark plugs.

If the fuel is two years old, it is stale & needs to be replaced.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds to prime the system when you turn the ignition on.

Let me know how you go

96 ciera 2.2 ran fine. parkedat night next morn wont start.its getting fuel and fire but sounds like its not even trying to start

Check for spark.. pull one spark plug out set it on bare metal(away from cyl hole fuel could light from spark) turn vehicle over and look for spark should be a nice lightning bolt looking spark... blue spark is weak spark.. and see if it's getting spark...,, if not,,."try new plugs.,wires, distributor cap&rotor " also first.spray a little starting fluid down the injection system turn it over and see if it fires.if it does then it's a fuel issue prob not electrical... try that.hope it helps

2.4 pt cruiser wont try to crank even with starting fluid its got good firing on all cylinders good suction at intake and fuel pumps getting fuel to motor have no way to tell how strong the fuel press

If a volatile starting fluid, typically ether, won't make it fire or even sound like it is trying to fire the problem is likely to be with the spark though if attempting to start continuously for some time hasn't caused the smell of petrol about the place and caused the spark plugs to show signs of wetness there probably isn't any injection taking place either.

In the absence of both spark and injection it could be an immobiliser problem or it could be one or both of the positional sensors (crankshaft or camshaft) or the connections or wiring or the ECU that has failed.
A code read might help.

I suggest spending some time checking the fuses first and then carry out a thorough visual inspection of all the associated pipes, wires and cables before moving on to a more in depth diagnosis.

Good luck!

89 jeep wrangler 2.5 4 cylinder wont start. It turns over strong but wont catch even with starting fluid it just goes whir, whur, whir, etc. I have spark. thought it might be injector but it seems like it...

Check the ignition timing as it appears that the firing order is wrong. Make sure that the cam shaft is turning as it could be the belt broken

Car wont start or fire even with starting fluid

To review - - if you have spark, fuel, and compression, you should have combustion.
In this case, if the timing belt is damaged, you might not have compression or spark at the right time.
A faulty crank or cam sensor could cause you not to have spark at the right time.
The spark plugs could be worn out or fuel fouled and not able to fire under compression.

Daughter ran 97 ranger out of gas, now it wont start, reset the fuel pump button and have gas shooting out of releif vavle, but still wont start, tried many times. Please help. Thanks

You have fuel at the rail, now it's time to see if it's making it past the injectors. Disconnect the air intake duct from the throttle body. Have an assistant crank the engine over while opening the throttle slightly. Spray starting fluid into the throttle body and see if the engine attempts to start. If it does, then the injectors are not firing. The reason the injectors are not firing could be :
1. Blown injector fuse (sometimes marked "INJ").
2. Bad crank sensor.
3. No power to computer.
4. Computer problem (bad injector drivers).
If you have tried to start the vehicle many times, then you should start to smell fuel if it is getting into the engine. If you smell fuel, then let it sit for a while and try checking for spark. An inexpensive spark tester can be purchased from most parts stores. The reason for no spark could be :
1. Blown ignition fuse (sometimes marked "IGN").
2. Failed ignition module.
3. bad crank sensor.
4. bad ignition switch.
If everything checks out, then try disconnecting the battery for at least 20min. the longer the better. If the engine still wont start, then more advanced diagnostics will be needed to determine the problem. I hope that this information is helpful and thank you for using
WARNING : Wear safety glasses when performing the starting fluid test. Keep hands and loose clothing away from moving engine parts and cooling fan motor. Use caution when working around distributorless ignition systems. These systems produce extremely high voltages which can cause severe injury or even death.

Wont't fire and i have fuel and spark and it won't even fire off of starting fluid and i just replaced the headgaskets

Check the spark plugs, see if they are gas fouled,or if they are getting fuel. Some times transmission fluid can be pured in the intake and it will give it compresson, and dry some of the fuel up,and it will start, try it.

I have a 1999 gmc Yukon it is getting fuel and spark i even sprayed starter fluid in the intake but it still wont start it turns over good but wont start

ok make sure you have good fuel pressure
you must have good spark must fire a spark tester
if all that is good then check compression
and don't use STARTER FLUID on a GAS ENGINE it can blow a hole through the piston
hope this helps
