I'm assuming you mean it did crank over but did not start.

To a mechanic did not crank to us means dead battery or failed starter.

You stated it tried to start. This tell me the fuel pump failed. If you can spray quick start or brake cleaner in the throttle and it starts then the fuel pump failed. You may hear it running but it may not be pumping anything. You will need to confirm with a pressure gauge and a diagnostic scanner in order to confirm you have no other issues that can be seen.

If there is fuel pressure to the injectors, then the injectors are not pulsing, check for codes in the computer with a code reader, this will help a lot, but,if I had to guess,I would say the crankshaft sensor is at fault,it causes spark, and also pulse to the injectors,I hope this was helpful, and if so,please let us know, there needs to be a fuel pressure test to confirm the fuel pump is working correctly, and has enough pressure.

Sudden no starts are usually gas or ignition related. That's why the mantra check for spark and check for gas. If you check for spark at a spark plug and have a blue snapping spark, the ignition is probably good. To check for gas, best to check fuel pressure, as high fuel pressure against the injectors ensures that proper amount of gas will be sprayed out by the injectors. Do you hear the fuel pump buzz on for a couple of seconds when the key is turned to on? If not, try banging on the bottom of the gas tank to see if pump will work. If it does, you will need to replace the pump-may work a couple more times by tapping on the tank, but the pump is basically gone.
If gas and spark is present, one would next need to check the injector circuit.
If spark is absent or weak, it could be the crank position sensor, ignition control module (under the coil pack), cam position sensor, or the pcm.

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

What's your problem?my car out of gas put 2 gallons in won't start

Most likely air got in the fuel line. Try pumping the gas vigorously while turning the key to get the car started. Pumping will dispel the air in the line until you get a constant stream of fuel. Once started, you should be good to go.

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

did you check the fuse for the fuel pump you don`t say.there is also a fuel pump relay in the system.if you bypass the system then the ecm won`t have control for the pump, which controls the 2 second prime at the beginning when key turned on and it won`t shut off the pump in case of an accident when the engine stops.you can bypass it but its not recommended because this.if you do bypass make sure you have a 25amp fuse wired into the power wire and a on/off switch that you must remember to turn on and off every time you drive the car.

It is gas related because it started. Check the fuel pump, pump fuse, relay, or reset button. Check your fuel filter. Make sure your gas lines are good and check your fuel injectors. Your problem is with the fuel, so you shouldn't have to worry about anything else, just the fuel components. Your engine is not getting gas. Check all these things and you will find your problem.

Sounds like a faulty fuel pump to me.

On most vehicles with fuel injection, when you switch ignition ON the engine computer runs a fuel pump for a few seconds to pump initial gas pressure. You can hear it from the gas tank area - it's like a buzzing sound. It's not very loud and the gas pump works only for a second or two after switching the ignition ON, so you may need someone's assistance checking this. If there is no buzzing sound, something might be wrong with the fuel pump or its electrical circuit - bring your vehicle to the garage or a dealer.
