How you set the timing

Your engine computer will set the timing as you drive your car. The computer has full control of the timing and monitors it constantly, adjusting it as you drive to get the best performance and gas mileage from your engine. If you have an older car.....you need a timing light....a special 90 degree closed end wrench...I think 1/2" or 9/16".....and a helper to tell you when the marks line up using the timing light.....ohh yeah....you spin the distributer left or right to advance or retard the timing. when the marks are in alignment on your fly wheel and the gauge marker under the timing light....turn off the engine....tighten the distributer hold down bolt, (located under the distributer cap), back tight to hold the distributer haft in place.....then your done..good luck and always work and play safe.

How to install 95 astro/safri v6 distribtor

You have to take the access panel off inside the van. There used to be two screws on the outside under the hood and the two clips inside that have to be released. Mine was older so I don't know if they are the same. Find the wire that is going to #1 spark plug. The is the spark plug at the very front of the drivers side. Mark the wire and its relationship to the cap someway. Mark all the other wires in the cap so you know their location when you put the new distributer in. Or leave them in the cap if you are going to use the same cap. Take the cap off and turn the engine over so the rotor is pointing directly to the #1 wire. It may not hurt to make some other point of reference, where the rotor is pointing to. Loosen up the bolt at the base of the distributer, blow all dirt away and turn and pull up slightly on distributer. Do not crank engine at any point during this time until the new distributer is in. Once you have it loose take the bolt out or at least slide the clamp all the way out of the way, Remove the distributer. Remove the base gasket for the distributer and clean the surface and put a new gasket on. Put the new distributer in paying close attention to where the rotor has to line up. The point of reference I told you to make earlier. You need to turn the rotor slightly CCW from the reference point as it will turn CW a little when it is mated into the cam gear and seating to the motor. If the distributer will not go in where you need it, it may be possible that the oil pump drive has moved a little. You may need to get a long screwdriver and go into the distributer hole and turn is slightly. After you get the distributer in, you should be able to put the cap back on. Or put all wires back on to the same positions that I told you to mark earlier. If you followed this closely then the engine should start. It should probably be timed. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

How to put in a distributor in a 88 chrysler conquest

Make sure the timing mark on the harmonic dampner is at tdc. drop the distributer in the hole so as the distributer gear engages with the cam gear , it will rotate slightly. You want the rotor to end up lined up with the number one spark plg wire position on the distributer cap. If the car doesn't fire and you are sure you have power to the distributer, then you will need to pull the distributer out and turn the rotor 180 degrees and reinstall. The motor should then fire.

I cranked the motor over a few times to get to the ignition module, I then pulled the distributer out without marking anything. Now I have motor at TDC, line on crank pulley lined up with notch on motor...

If you have it at #1 on the crank marks, you need to install the distributor so that #1 on the cap lines up with the rotor. I think you have a 350, so #1 is at about 12 o'clock if you view it from the front of the car-see diagram:mikemt_1.jpg

When taking the distributor off do i need to set the timing of the distributor

Yes. Roll the engine over onto #1 cylinder TDC and remove the distubuter cap. Place a mark on the body of the distributer inline with the rotor point before you do anything else. This mark may already be there, but if not, it needs to be permanent, such as a tiny chisel cut. Now you can withdraw the distributer. When replacing, it may have to engage the oil pump drive, so be careful you engage this properly. If not engaged, the distributer will not go down fully. As you inset the distributer, align the rotor with your mark. Make several attemps until you get it in pace and your mark lined up.You will notice the distributer shaft will turn as you insert it so you need to allow for that. Use a timing light to finally set the ignition timing.

How do I set the distributor on a 2000 gmc jimmy? Just changed the intake gaskets, but forgot to mark the position of the rotor.

Get the number one piston up, Take the spark plug out the first one on the drivers side.Rotate the engine until the piston reaches TDC before it starts to decend back. U can use a screw driver to put in the spark plug hole. The rotor must point towards the number one spark plug. your local library will have this infor or autozone

Where is distributor located1995 960 6cyl

hi, if you follow the leads that come from the top of the spark plugs where all these leads plug into is the distributer their will be four leads running along the outside going to each spark plug then the lead that goes into the center of the distributer goes to the coil.

So if you follow the four ht leads from the spark plugs what these all plug into is the distributer, if you are removing the distributer then make sure you mark where each lead goes as you need to put them all back in the right place.
Its best if you mark say the first lead with a 1 and then write a one onto the distributer where that lead goes into use permanent marker pen to do this so it dont rub off. getting the leads the wrong way round will mean the car will either miss fire or not run at all so just keep it all marked up properly.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

TDC stands for Top Dead Center, however it is only to set the cylinder number ! at TDC, if yu know where the timing marks are align the crank pulley mark to the "0" of the timing mark, usually this can be achieved by setting the crank shaft doel pin to twelve 0 clock position.
