Hello, check the fuse, inside the driving compartment, also their is fuses under the hood, on the drivers side, these cars has a lot of relays, their should be relays for compressor, and auxiliary fan, they could be on the same fuse or relay, they would be a pretty big fusefor both, i believe the fuses for comp, fans are red, should be 30 amp fuses.

2002 GMC Envoy. AC fan stops completely. When moving position switch to defrost or front and foot position it sounds like a something is clicking in the vent.


which fan, there are 3 to 4 fans.
saying fan means zero. on cars.
did you know on modern car the PCM cranks up all fans ? on A/C demand? not just 1.?

my guess, the Dash heater/A/C HVAC blower fan dies. in the dash?
The dash sections here, have dampers.
they work one of 3 ways, vacuum, cables or motors. (or mixed)
the FSM covers this.
the damper can fail many a way, as can the fan and there controls.

A/c stops???
please tell what that means, sure cold air stops.
we get that.
but does the main blower work. at all speeds.>
if the blower stops the A/C air stops but also
the compressor goes offline (clutch)
if 12v power reaches a dead blower motor the compressor does not know this is true and keeps going, so if car is moving air does flow
non recir, and it does get cold, proving A/C works.

im guessing you are not taking the 3 fans on front end of car.
2 for engine rad fans and 1 more in front of A/c Condensor.

the car came new with 2 HVAC options, automatic and manual.
im not guessing that either
the car came with optional aux blower too. long wheel base car>?

Auxiliary HVAC Control Module
The auxiliary HVAC control module is a class 2 device that interfaces between the rear seat occupants and the auxiliary HVAC system to maintain auxiliary air temperature and auxiliary air distribution settings. The battery positive voltage circuit provides power that the control module uses for keep alive memory (KAM). If the battery positive voltage circuit loses power, all auxiliary HVAC DTCs and settings will be erased from KAM. The auxiliary HVAC control module will perform a recalibration of the electric actuators when commanded with a scan tool or if KAM is lost. This will ensure the actuators are moving with in the calibrated range. During this calibration process the auxiliary blower motor will be disabled for up to 3 minutes.
Defrost Actuator
The defrost actuator is a 5 wire bi-directional electric motor that incorporates a feedback potentiometer. Ignition 3 voltage, low reference, control, 5 volt reference and position signal circuits enable the actuator to operate. The control circuit uses either a 0, 2.5 or 5 volt signal to command the actuator movement. When the actuator is at rest, the control circuit value is 2.5 volts. A 0 or 5 volt control signal commands the actuator movement in opposite directions. When the actuator shaft rotates, the potentiometer's adjustable contact changes the door position signal between 0-5 volts.
The HVAC control module uses a range of 0-255 counts to index the actuator position. The door position signal voltage is converted to a 0-255 count range. When the module sets a commanded, or targeted, value, the control signal is changed to either 0 or 5 volts depending upon the direction that the actuator needs to rotate to reach the commanded value. As the actuator shaft rotates the changing position signal is sent to the module. Once the position signal and the commanded value are the same, the module changes the control signal to 2.5 volts.

if a real DIY person, why not buy the FSM and not try to work ALL THAT and more blind.?

see the diagram:you must test a) fuse open b)relais defective c)defective clutch d)wires problem, loose wires, break, broken or burn repair.

2001 BMW 325ti Wagon Radiator Fan turns on by it self in the middle of the night or day even if the car wasn't driven. could this be the control module, is it located on the fan shroud?


Hi matthew,

The auxiliary fan for your car is known for internally shorting to power. The fan could run continuously until the battery is completely exhausted. I would recommend having it checked/ and or replaced soon. The fan is replaced as an assembly unfortunately.

My 1998 Z3 1.9L 5sp has poor a/c. the freon is good and the fan is working correctly. did these cars ever have ice cold a/c of it is the design. it's cool but not cold. Can you give me some advise?...


Hi dwhbuf,

I am assuming when you mean the freon is good that it has a correct charge. If the freon level is correct, I would recommend checking 3 things. 1st, make sure that when the a/c is on that the electric auxiliary fan in front of the engine is on..without it working, a/c cooling will be affected. 2nd, make sure that you can hear a definite change in the blend door when adjusting between heat and cooling. 3rd, Check under the car to make sure your evaporator drains have water coming out, they can get restricted and clogged. If everything seems ok, you will need to have some verify the a/c system pressures are correct. Other possibilities are a weak a/c compressor or restricted a/c system.

A motor located in the front Driver side of the engine compartment keeps running after the car is shut off. It sounds like it might be driving a compressor. What do I have to do to keep it from running?


It sounds like u have air shocks/struts and you may have a leak. As long as there is a leak the compressor is going to run and run down your battery. You can replace the air shocks/struts or go with regular shocks/strut and disconnect the compressor.

Fan relay not working , fan keeps going on and off wont stay running


One of your fans works off the coolant temperature sensors input and will only engage when the coolant temperature reaches and/or exceeds a certain preset degree. The other runs off of your a/c compressor and when it engages so will the auxiliary or secondary cooling fan. Start the engine cold, turn on the a/c and listen for the secondary fan to engage then as it warms up listen to see if the primary fan engages. when it reaches running temperature. Please rate me on this answer.

Fan not working on 323 99 bmw just replaced resistor pack(?) and still not working. Waspretty sure based on info/common problem this wolud work


Yes, that would be my first choice as well.

Brown is ground on just about all german based vehicles.

Run 12v directly to the motor. w/o the resistor pack it will go to it's highest speed. if it doesn't run, motor bad.

Figured you've checked the fuse 1st. but worth mentioning. may as well replace the relay because it's easier than running 12v to the motor.

So you've run 12v to the motor, checked fuse, replaced relay, and it still doesn't run. Wait a minute......which fan is this? The interior fan or auxillary cooling fan in front of the condenser? How the heck can I give repair advice when I don't know which fan it is?

Nevermind. State problem more clearly.

Where is the auxillary fan fuse located on 1997 bmw 318i?


Auxiliary Cooling Fan Circuit Fuses
Fuse 16 is 5 amps located in front power distribution box under hood, drivers side near rear of engine compartment.

Fuse 41 (ex. M44 w/man. trans) is 30 amp (probably not your car) in front power distribution box

Fuse 48 (M44 w/man. trans only) is 40 amp (The auxiliary fuse box in trunk for E36 is on the right side of trunk behind the trim panel.)
