Question about 2001 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Jimmy tht just started goiong into

I have a 2001 Jimmy that just started going into 4LO on it's own. I was driving down my street at about 10 mps and it dropped into 4LO on it's own. Is this a common problem, am I in danger of it happening while going 50 mph? What could it be? Thanks..D. Payne

Wow this is pretty bad, 4 Lo should not be able to engage unless the truck is stopped and in neutral and 4 HI can be engaged while driving at any speed or stopped. This sound like a electronic switch issue since the newer full time 4WD are controlled electronically.

Now I personaly didn't have it switch into 4Lo but I had my jimmy try to switch into 4 weel drive all on it's own, I would seriously get a mechanic to look check out the pump that ingages your 4 weel drive cause it is faulty and causing damage to your front dif

Universal joint removal

The easiest, is to remove the drive shaft
and take to a specialty shop that does drive
shaft work,balancing etc

Next choice is to take down the street to a
local garage and have them replace joints,
assuming they won't use a hammer,and have
the correct tools

You could carefully use a socket, your bench vice
and a hammer and a brass punch

Either way, I personnally balance all drive shafts,
flywheels,clutch assy's etc

HOW DO I PUT A 1998 GMC JIMMY IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE?, DO I HAVE BE IN "PARK" OR CAN I CHANGE IT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE WHILE IM DRIVING?

You should be able to put in 4x4 while in drive less than 35mph. Mine had a switch to turn to engage or dis-engage.

My truck is stuck in 4LO and the button in the truck dont work.

If its a push button 4x4 take it to the shop its a VERY COMMON Problem dealing with the electric.Once you pay the $400 to get it fixed get rid of the truck and settle for a Jimmy/Blazer/Bravada with a floor shift 4x4..GM had problems with the push button 4x4.DONT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK IN THE MEANTIME.YOU WILL BLOW YOUR TRANSFER CASE RIGHT OUT OF IT!

Jimmy wont lock in four wheel drive.

You need to see if the transfer case engagement motor is defective.
