Question about Ford F 450 Super Duty

3 Answers

Whenever I turn on my head/parking lights in my 1995 National Dolphin 533 RV, my cruise control quits. The RV is built on a Ford chassis with a Ford 460 CID V-8 engine and transmission.

The cruise control and the head light switch are in totally different areas of the dash.
The cruise control switch is on the transmission control and the headlight switch is on the dash.

  • John Christensen Feb 01, 2010

The cruise control switch contacts do not have any headlight current going through them. If it did, turning the cruise control would effect the headlights or parking lights. It does not. Also, if the contacts were poor, clicking them on or off would solve the problem part of the time. It does not.

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

If this were the case, lower battery voltage would cause problems. This is not the case. Turning on/off other loads such as the heater fan would cause larger spikes than the running / parking lights, also the cruise control will not turn on when the lights are on even when there is no "spikes".

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

I reject the last solution, see my comment.

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

Unless the "spike" lasts for hours, the cruise control will not function even an hour or 2 after the lights have been turned on.

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

I don't have the answers, that is why I asked for "Expert" help. I do know that the "answers" do not match any of the reasons given. I too have experience, over 50 years as a technition/ engineer in electricronics. I am hoping for some previous experience with this problem.

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

Are you telling me a "spike" will last for hours?

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

Others have guessed a spike when turning on the lights. The C.C. will not work whenever the lights are on, no matter how long. Other electrical devices do not cause this problen.

  • John Christensen Feb 02, 2010

Just receiently got it. Bulbs are fine (working). Brake lights work and C.C. does not need to be restarted after hitting the brakes.

Have you checked for current feeding back through to brake switch when headlights are turned on, tripping Cruise control? Maybe a shorted bulb feeding back. You might even have to try removing bulbs to try and isolate it.

Let me guess, former owner didn't have any problems with it before either right? Didn't call and ask them by chance did you? Sorry that's all that comes to mind. Personally I'd still check for any voltage at all at switch at pedal, on opposite side of the power in when lights are on. I'll unlock this for now, but will come back if anything else comes to mind. Good Luck. Could be a tough one to find. It is Ford factory cruise I assume, and they didn't have any ideas, or haven't got that far yet?

This is almost certainly caused by a defective cruise control servo, this is what operates the cable to the throttle valve, the problem is most likely stemming from the voltage spike created when the lights are turned on. If you follow the cruise cable at the throttle valve on the engine throttle linkage it will lead back to the cruise control actuator servo control

I know that the contacts don't have any direct connection, that is not what i said, when u turn on the lights a voltage spike is created, this spikes the cruise off, I have been a Ford dealer Texh for 30 + years, so not talking without some backfround, u asked for expert assistance, u got it from a veteran certifed and factory trained Ford tech. This is not a common problem, have seen it only a few times over the last decade or so.

U seem to have the answers here, so why did you ask for help?? Hum.

Great back ground, that doesn't make u a Ford master tech in electronic control systems, I have run into many fold over the years who ask for help which i give freely and then argue with me, sorry but that is what seems to be happening here. My other life was 8 years as an Air Force electronics level 9 (the highest) electronics technician. good luck here.

On some of those cruise switches u can take them apart and clean the contacts. that would be the reason for the problem if not replace

97 ford e super duty v10 rv turn signal & stop lights quit

It could be one of the two brake switches. The turn signals will be routed through them and the cruise module uses them, so if it detects something amiss, it's likely that it wont operate.

Parking Brake Light won't turn off, Cruise Control won't engage

Get down and look at parking brake assembly, If you see an electrical connector, unplug it, see if that helps? If it doesn't help or causes other issues just plug it back in.
Of course that isn't the proper fix. If something wrong with parking brake assembly, get it checked out.

It sounds like you have a problem with the combination switch ( or also called turn signal switch ). To get to the flasher pull the heater control switch or the radio out and the flasher is on the left side, it might have a black cover on it
