It could be a few things, head gasket, blocked radiator, dodgy water pump, thermostat. Start the engine when it's cold & take off the radiator cap (don't do this when the engine is hot). Did you notice if the coolant is getting swished around? You're basically checking that it's getting circulated around the engine. If not then most likely the thermostat is stuck closed.

This is located inside the housing which connects the top coolant hose to the radiator. Replacing it is handy enough if you're okay with the spanners & the manual is available free to download from the net. You'll find handy tips on how to check if the thermostat is faulty in the troubleshooting section.

Cooling fan motor gets hot when running high speed why

Check the bearings. If the friction is high the fan will not run at rated speed. When it runs slower it uses more current and gets hotter...

Disassemble, clean and lubricate to make sure fan runs full blast and does not burn out.

Or if the fan has two windings, one for starting and one for running it is possible that the high speed run winding has some shorts in it resulting in more current and more heat.

My 1998 lexus e300 is running hot and I noticed the cooling fans are both running but at low speed. what controls the fan speed

The PCM(computer) controls the fan speed. Low speed comes on around 200 degrees, high speed kicks on at around 225 degrees. If they come on when you first start the engine, the coolant sensor is bad. PCM is in default mode and runs the fans all the time. Since it doesn't read the 225 mark, it won't kick on the high speed. Turning on the A/C will also kick on the high speed fans. That's if your A/C works.

2003 ford escape fans do not run in till the a/c is turned on.

There are four relays for the cooling fans .low speed control , medium speed , high speed fan control relay 2 , high speed fan control relay 1, there is also a engine cooling fan resistor .The engine coolant temp. sensor would most likely cause the check engine light to be on . There is also a dual pressure switch , this is for the A/C . The cooling fans will be turned on at 213 degress low speed , high speed at 226 degress . If you had factory scan tool or a professional type you could view coolant temp data in pcm , you could also energize the relays to see if the system is operating normally . There are other repair shops beside dealers

Radiator fan runs at high speed all the time wont slow down. 2004 limited V8

If your thermostat is bad, it will cause the ecu to keep the fan running at high speed since the engine is remaining hot from limited coolant flow. Have the thermostat checked and changed if it has never yet been replaced.

If running ok at idle and not running hot, then I'd first examine my rad hoses very carefully, especially lower rad hose. If old and soft, easy to squeeze then replace it/them. Also replace rad cap as well. A soft hose may be collapsing when engine RPM increases, and restricting flow through engine. Next would be to observe water flow with engine running to be sure water pump is doing it's job. I assume you have cleaned and checked rad already. Note: if you run at highway speeds and it gets hot, try turning heater on high fan and hot setting to see if temperature gauge goes down at all, which would make me lean toward a faulty radiator.

93 villager runs good, but temp. gauge runs up to the hot line, but never runs hot. is the a colling fan that should go on.

the cooling fan should come on low speed and then high speed as it gets hotter.

The fan should come on anytime the a/c clutch engages, even cold engine.
3 cooling fan realys in battery box in front of battery. controlled by signal from engine coolant sensor. siganl from engine computer.

I need a wiring diagram for the radiator fan on my 2001 pt cruiser

Check your public library they may even have access to a paid data base. Maybe this will help. With electric fans it's almost always the motor, It's a two speed fan that has three wires. The black is ground, the dark green is the hot for the low speed and the yellow is the hot for the high speed. Run jumpers from the battery to the fan connector. If the fan doesn't run the motor is bad.

My 2000 eclipse 2.4L runs hot at idle only

Your car should have a High and low speed connector there. That would cause the problem you described, if the PCM sees the temp at about 195 the low speed fan should kick on, if that fan doesn't provide enough airflow it kicks on to high speed to cool quicker. in your case the low speed is non existent and the computer is simply waiting for the temp to raise to the point where it triggers the high speed relay.
