Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

We start the vehicle (2000) jeep grand cherokee limited) and it sounds like the intake manifold is rattling, up near the motor. A rattle/baffle/pop type of sound. Once it warms up it seems to not be as bad. We just had a new radiator, water pump, PC and AC unit motor put in, nearly $3500 in repairs. 3 months later this happens. 127k miles. Bought it with 29k. Great shape but it seems to be falling apart

This is a year 2000 Jeep Grad Cherokee Limited. It states a 1996 model above.

What is the typical cost to fix this gasket and can I take it to a muffler shop? I'm tired of getting hammered by the dealers.

Sounds like the exhaust manifold and or gasket for that manifold. what happens is the metal gets hot and expands and tightens up the matting surface of the gasket. it may just be a simple gasket replacement. or could be a crack in it. but i see more gaskets then cracks. please ask any more question you have.

check the coolant level. check thermostat for correct operation. Have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracks . All indications are that the motor is overheating badly.

Lost power smoke exhaust

If it is a 6 cylinder inline then catalyst is plugging up a easy test would be to remove a oxygen sensor and see if power returns to normal. V-8 models have 2 types of manifolds plastic and metal the metal ones have a plate bolted to the bottom which the gasket splits and sucks in engine oil causing all sorts of drive ability issues the plastic versions more trouble free but PCV ventilation system can cause smoking

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rattling noise coming from the gearbox, almost sounds like a worn release bearing on a manual box. The noise only appears after 1-2 min after cold start. Gearbox further...

If you notice a change in the rattle, when you depress the clutch pedal it is most likely in the clutch,or the linkage. The release bearing will most often have a squeal or a hissing sound. The clutch fork can rattle, if the ball pivot retainer is broken. You may feel some unwanted slack in the clutch opperation, and you may be able to adjust this out,but maybe not, with a hydraulic clutch.
