Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I have 1996 galant. the emergency brake light is on and seems like the brake is stuck although the lever is down. the brakes are grinding and the car does not roll when in neutral. i checked the brake fluid reservoir and it's full. any suggestions on what can be causing the problem? By the way, the car sat for about 4 months before i bought it and the weather has been in the teens.

Your emergency brake cables or at least one is frozen up or the brake shoes are frozen to the drum try removing the stuck tire and pour boiling water on the brake drum this should free up the shoes, the light is on because of the lever is not all the way down until cable goes back to normal.

Emergency lever switch is stuck

More likely it's the adjustable switch under your brake pedal if your brake lights won't turn off. Emergency brake lever does not turn your brake lights on at all. If you are referring to your brake light on the dash, sometimes that is also an indication that your brake fluid is low. Emergency lever switch going bad is very rare.

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

Ford taurus 1996 3.0 ABS ligth on

Hello, These warning lights are pretty accurate. Autozone, Advance, and Oreillys give free scans although the engine system and brake system can require different scanners.

Check your brake fluid level first. The ABS system requires sensors which require counting the revolutions of each wheel. Sometimes the sensors may break, but they can be blinded by dust and debris.

If you have a broken brake pad, the warning light can come on. Often the Emergency brake pad, inside the rear Rotor, can fall apart and trigger an ABS warning.

You need to inspect both the front and rear brakes or take your car to a brake shop for evaluation. Sometimes you can get a free estimate, and some shops can charge for inspecting the Emergency brakes because of the work needed to reach them.

The brake light warning BRAKE (I) is on, and there is a grinding noise, like the emergency brake is engaged. Especially, the brakes seem to engage in reverse. Could this be the emergency brakes, or is a...

Sounds like the parking brake is hanging up- it's been set and won't release. Pull the handle, can you feel an increasing tension through its travel or does it just move with an even resistance and then stop hard?

If the case is the second, then the parking brake is hung up. If the handle feels like it's working properly then there may be either foreign matter in one or both rear brakes or one or both have parts that have failed- a spring, for instance, on a rear brake shoe. It would just rub going forward but would set hard backing up.

The left rear driverside wheel is grinding and the emergancy break won't engage when preesed. Although the brake light comes on. can you tell me what could be wrong

Hi

Is it drum brakes? if so it sounds like the brakes have came away inside, hence the gringing, they have springs to hold them in place, they often brake if a lot of pressure was put on the emergency brake, that or a cable has snapped and stuck them on. Quite confident that will be the issue.

Hope that helps

I used my cars emergency brake for the first time over the weekend. I released the brake but it seems to be stuck and the car doesnt want to move either forward or backward. It's like the brake is stuck....

Ok not sure what car u have but most rear brakes are the same unless it has disc brakes on the rear. Release the brake and then crawl under the car and look at the back of the rear brake drum, you will see a cable going either in or across the rear drum to a lever.Try tapping the lever away from the cable and see if this frees up your brakes. Good luck.

Brake light is on, emergency brake doesnt work too well, not sure how to tighten the slack in the cable, and if its not so simple id like to know how to turn the light off to get a sticker

The brake light switch is stuck on.The switch is located under the dash, and if you follow the arm up from the brake pedal you should be able to see the plunger where it contacts the arm.As far as your emergency brake if you have a center console lever there may be a adjustment there or if you look under the car there should be a adjustment at the equelizer. This is where a single cable goes in to two cables.Well good luck and hope this helps.

EMERGENCY BRAKE

All you can do is try some wd40 on it and try to work it free, if it won't go, then a new caliper is needed. To bleed the brakes, locate the bleed nipple on the caliper, get someone to sit in the car, then when you open the nipple (just crack it), get the person to push the brake pedal down and hold it down. Then close the nipple and release the pedal, repeat this process on both calipers until the pedal becomes right. Becareful when the pedal is pressed that you don't get covered in brake fluid, try and catch it in a container as it is lethal stuff.
