Question about 1998 Honda Civic
There is a big number of faults that can cause the same.
The first thing to do is an ECU (car computer) scan to retrieve stored fault codes. This will tell us more on the nature of the problem.
If you are located in US, the scan can be done for free at the nearest Autozone. Write the codes on paper, as you will not receive a printout with the codes if you choose the free service.
If you do not have this facility, the scan can be done at the nearest garage for a small fee (usually half an hour labor).
After getting the codes come back to us, and we can troubleshoot furtherly.
If you had diagnostic done, please tell us the nature of the sporadic fault (error code). Since the engine warning light came on, then there must be error code stored in the ECU memory. Those codes are telling why the car is loosing power and the light is coming on.
Note: if the car is suddenly loosing power, and engine running rough, with the light engine maintenance turning on check if the car is misfiring and going on three cylinders because of a wiring problem or of a bad spark plug. That is a very common situation that may cause the symptoms described.
To be more precise I will need the engine codes scanned as first step in troubleshooting. This must be done after the engine maintenance light comes on, and before disconnecting the battery.
