OK, here we go. Ford F150 5.4L 3 Valve - 90K miles - so far all work done at Ford Dealer Engine was indicating rich on ECL codes after a spark plug change for a lean. Initially spark plug change yielded a lean condition, changed plug on #3 again - went to a rich condition. All this on bank #1. 20 hours of dealer diagnostics - finally yielded broken roller lifter on #3 intake, replace roller lifer and cam itself on bank one. Now runs nicely at speed, but intermittently engine drops to a low idle at stop sign etc. below 500rpm, turns rough, if left long enough throws a P0012 code. Interestingly, if in this condition a smooth speed increase to 2K RPM and gentle relax, condition will go away, can idle smooth for an hour without mishap. But go out on freeway a few miles, come to a stop may go back into poor idle mode. We've spent $3K on this over the last 45 days, Ford is being a putz, looking for suggestions. Out of frustration replaced bank #1 VCT last week. Not much difference. Any help would be appreciated. Douglas

I have codes p0202 p0203 p2196, when i go to ford dealer they told me i need a new engine because cylinder #2 is low in compression only 17%, but the report they gave me doesn't show the code p2196.

Code P2196 indicates a rich condition. My guess is that raw fuel is passing through the non-firing cylinders is the cause of the rich condition and will probably be corrected when the engine is repaired. You can't chase a rich condition when you have a poor running engine.

Spark plugs don't fail to fire. They are replaced at 60,000 miles or 3 years.
Scanning for codes and using an ignition scope, are two different things
I have run OEM plug wires 17,18 and currently 21 years, on different vehicles.
Replace, only if they fail and test bad. Only one wire EVER fails, not all of them
The O2 Sensor may have set a code.
You don't change it,because of that.
You look at the data, and if it is working correctly, and what caused it to go
out of range and set the check light.

Did he check for a failed injector,on the bank that was rich?
Was exhaust gas tested, to determine the rich condition?
There is no guessing or might be's

Do a cylinder leak down test
Don't like the results, pull the valve cover, and check out the valve spring theory

What was the codes that you got when driving it?
How many miles on it?
Vehicle history?

Hello. I have a 1998 Toytoa Corolla LE. When I bought the car (private party) and got it checked out at a mechanic at 84k miles he told me there is a recommended 90k maintenance I should do. I have now...

A lot can happen by 90k miles.
CV joints need to be cleaned and relubricated, timing belts need changing, brakes usually need to be replaced, fan belts need to be checked, water pumps need checking, etc.
Normally you figure you are almost half way through the life of the car, so almost anything could need work. You need to check long term effects, like transmission and differential fluid levels, etc.

But no, there is no reason to go to a dealer.
Any mechanic will know what to do and can easily do it with good parts.

90k , timing belt new @ 80k worked fine sprayed engine with water to clean dust started and ran fine nest day started but then idled up to 4k and wouldn't idle down drove it about 5 miles and got off...

I have ran into this problem at my shop. There are 3 things that could be bad. Idle air control valve, pcv valve or the vacum hose for the pcv valve. Vicually inspect the pcv vale hoses. If you dont see a tear, spray carb cleaner around the hose, if engine idle changes there is a vacum leak in hose some where. If pcv valve and hose are ok than its your idle air control valve. You can attempt to remove part and clean it but this is only a temporary fix, Good luck.

2003 F150 4.6 w/ 90K miles using a quart of oil every 3 weeks. what's most likely cause?

A V8 engine will start to consume more oil as they get more and more
miles on them. The valve stem seals and piston rings wear, and let
more and more oil burn off in the exhaust. How many miles are you
travelling in said 3 weeks?
