Is it tough moving shift through the rest of the gears? if so you linkage could be sticking. if it is just park and the button gives you trouble then the shift interlock system has a problem. two things with that system are the brake switch and the solenoid that pull the lock in the shifter to let it move and the button depress. so i would first check the brake switch seeing that is the most common issue.

let me know some more info and i can help further.

Why is it so hard to shift it out of park

Set your parking brake before you put it in park. Weight on the parking pawl in your transmission can make it difficult to shift out of park.

Car will not shift out of park

You could try it with the key switch in the unlock position but not on.
The problem could be the brake switch, the solenoid that locks the shifter in park, or a fuse.
It would also be very difficult to get out of park on a steep hill if the parking brake was not set first.

Rear brakes for toyota 89 how do i get drum off

The drums on this car are usually fairly difficult to remove since it is difficult to see the parking brake adjuster.
Make certain that the parking brake is released.
Following is the recommended procedure:
When the brake drum cannot easily be removed, perform the following steps.
1. Insert a bent wire or something similar through the hole on the brake drum, and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster
2. Using a screwdriver, reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the adjuster.

Car is difficult to get into park and once in park, won't start and can roll as if in nuetral

sounds like a broken parking pin in the tranny, car wont start because it has to be in park or nuteral to start it, put it in nutrual i bet it wll fire right up, with that pin broke there is nothing to keep the car from rolling so even though it looks like park from the shifers point, there is nothing holding it from rolling

Difficult to shift into drive from park. Can't

Could be possible bad motor mount. Does the engine look like it sits normally in the chassis? Watch the lower end of the transmission shift linkage while someone else shifts it. Look for places where it rubs against something else.

Gear Shifter

The park is locked out until the brake is pushed, make sure the brake lights work, if not test the brake light switch with a test light, if all that is ok then the solenoid that disengages the park lock out is defective.
