1986 Ford F250 Diesel Pickup doesn't charge

I have a 1986 Ford F250 Diesel Pickup. I started having trouble getting it started. I was able to start it after getting a jump from a Suburban (my car didn't have enough juice to start it). Eventually, I got it to a local shop. They said it needed an alternator and a starter. The price they quoted was higher than I could afford so I took it to an individual who works on diesels. He replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator, said the starter was fine but couldn't get the truck to hold charge. He checked the wiring and the alternator again and they all checked out fine. What else could it be?

Battery is fine - was checked out.

Alternator was checked. The proper amount of voltage isn't being produced - way to little to charge the battery but wiring seems to be ok.

Disconnect the alternator and see if battery runs low overnight, if it does the alternator has a defective diode in the rectifier, also was the battery load tested by a shop with proper load testing equip?

disconnect the alternator and see if battery runs low overnight, if it does the alternator has a defective diode in the rectifier, if the battery doesn't run down replace the alternator, also check for interior lights that might be on, visor lights are common reason as well as glove box lights

I would reccomend you go back to the alternators again. Have it tested. There are many bad parts going over the counter these days, and I have replaced"new alternators" 3 times before getting a good one.

If battery and alternator are good is starter solenoid pulling in? it may be that whilst you have a new battery it may require charging new doesn't mean fully charged, batt may have been on shelf for awhile

My truck is blowing white smoke out the tail pipe and I have no power wont go but I can idle around its a 2055 f250 turbo diesel, 300000 kms...litterally just started doing this a couple days ago..now ...

White smoke for a diesel means air in the fuel system. You will have to start at the engine, I start at the line going to the fuel pump. Get some fuel in a can, remove the line to the supply side of the pump and put another line from the can to the pump. If it starts and doesn't smoke , then you have to work your way back to the tank and find the spot that is sucking air. If it doesn't start the I would replace the filter first, check again. There is a possibility that the injector pump is bad, but these don't usually throw white smoke. They just make the engine have very little power or no start.

My 1986 F250 with a 6.9 diesel engine will not start on a warm day unless it is plugged in for an hour before. Once it fires up, it will run great and I can turn it off two hours later and it will still...

Sounds like your batteries are not producing like fully charged batteries. You may have to replace them do you have the tool to load check them? Hope this helps you. Darrell S

They are not too expensive... If you are going to go to the trouble of removing them anyways , I would put new ones in.

Ford f250 superduty turbo diesel 7.3L Will not crank

Charge the batteries. take a Reading to make sure that you are getting almost 14v to both batteries. If it is not charging then take the alternator back off and have them check it. you might have bought a bad one. There is a way to test the glow plus with out taking them out. ( Take a piece of wire long enough to reach all the glow plugs from the battery. unplug the glow plug wire.If you touch the end of the glow plug with the hot wire it should make a little spark. if no spark then the glow plug is bad. do this to each one, but one at a time)
