Question about 1994 Mercury Topaz

1 Answer

My daughter was driving her 1994 Topaz when it just quit running. It will crank over but not start. My best guess is fuel pump. Any other possible solutions?

1999 dodge ram 5.2 runs about thirty miles then stalls after running fine just suddenly loses all power sputters backfires engine stumbling badly. crank it up 4 or 5 hours later runs a little then same...

General advice:After warming up track the problem:sparkplugs (even new can have the ceramic parts broken/cracked /wiring (after warming up the isolation get's soft, can loose spark power)/ignition coil(s) (gets hot, stop runnig),running reach, fuel pump/fuel pump relay.Best guess:fuel pump mallfunction (low pressure) related, fuel filter cloged/water in the fuel/fuel line cloged/chipped. Cheers, hope u figure it out,let the people know.

Where is the carburetor on my 93 mercury topaz?

There isn't a carberator on your 93 mercury topaz. It is new enough to have electronic fuel injection (EFI).
When you say it wont crank, does that mean the starter wont turn the engined over? Or do you mean it wont start?
If the starter turns the engine and it wont start here's a trick that might work. Turn the ignition key to on but don't engage starter. Listen for a buzzing sound coming from underneath the vehicle near gas trank. The buzzing sound is the fuel pump pumping up pressure. The buzzing sound might last only one to two seconds. Then turn ignition key off and turn it on again NOT engaging the starter several more times. This will help prime the fuel up to the engine. After you've done this several times, the engine should start. Lt me know if I was any help.

My van suddenly quit while driving down the road. The fuel pump is working, but will just turn the engine over and not run.

Check for spark, if there is none, two possible problems, the ignition module is bad or the CPS (crank position sensor is not working).

My 1997 plymouth voyager turns over but won't start. It initially quit running while driving and my daughter had to have it towed. Any ideas what I should be looking for. I can't afford to pay to have...

Lots of possibilities, but I'd check first for spark remove a plug wire, shove a screwdriver shaft into the opening of the plug boot, and hold the metal shaft near the engine (hold it by the handle!)-have someone crank the engine, if there is a electrical arc to the engine block, you have spark. Move on the the top fuel rail (metal tube on top of the engine)-there is a light green cap somewhere on it, and after you unscrew it, there is what looks like a tire valve-get a rag, and put it over the valve loosely, and use a small screwdriver or the tip of a knife blade to push in the pin in the center of the valve while someone turns on the key (you do not have to start it)-if you get a good spurt of fuel, it is not your problem. Bad spark with just cranking is probably a crank sensor, but this happened when the car was running, so I'd suspect the can sensor first.

The fuel pump could have died when running, or the fuel filter could be plugged, but that's not likely-does it SOUND like it wants to start? then it is probably fuel issues, if it just cranks, it is probably spark.

Cranks but no start only after running a while good fuel pump pressure

I would put a scan tool on it there might be a soft code listed.

Autozone does this for free. Eliminate some guess work, this is a pretty "general" question that could have many possible solutions.

Hope this helps.

I own a 1994 Nissan Altima. It run out of gas an I had getting it to fire up. Once I got it cranked it maybe drove 150 yards spit an sputtered an then died. Now I can't get it to start at all.

possibly the fuel pump. fuel running thru the pump is what keeps the pump cool. if it runs out of gas it will get too hot and fry the pump. running one out of fuel causes a lot of pumps to go bad. id start by checking fuel pressure
