Why will my manual transmission not shift into reverse unless I turn the engine off? 1997 saab 900

linkage inside trani but let's hope not, and go with a sensor can't remember which one exactly, or it could b automatic shifter cable. Personal experience the last two were ruled out & it was the linkage. Big mess, costly. Get a for sure good trani tech or a whole different trans, if it is that. good luck:/ might want to just let reverse go:/

My audi A6 2.5T has been parked for about a month. Everything was fine when we parked it, but when I got in to drive it, I put my foot on the brake and pulled the handle from park to the drive position...

NO, it may be the linkage from the shifter to trany that broke off, or a bad selector switch that tells the trany and yoiu what gear you are in, there are a lot of electrionic in an audi so if that switch is bad it would cause this problem, also the linkage is very important, if you move the shifter and the cable is not connected to trany then the trany will not move its like you never left park,

I have a "96 Chrysler

Open the hood and look from the driverside, look back and down you will be looking at the trany and at the top you will see the linkage arm with the cable going to it, have someone move it through the gears with engine off!!!!, and see if the arm is moving, if the arm is moving then you may have trany problems, these tranys are known for problems, good luck. hope this helps. also heres a diagram to help you locate the arm at trany.johnjohn2_59.gif

This morning I shifted my 2003 Chevy Venture and it stopped in reverse and then the shifter itself slipped all the way to the right towards the floor without engaging any other gears. With it stuck in...

You will need to look at the top of the trany and see if the linkage is moving or if the cable is moving to determine the problem, look under the dash while moving the shifter to see if the bracket under the dash thats bolted to column come loose, if it did not then look at trany to see if the linkage came apart at trany.

Car will go into reverse but want engage in drive

is it a manual or auto? one of 3 things. your forward gears are out, could be 1st gear. your belts inside could be worn or out of adjustment. most cars have a small little part that attaches to the gear shift in the trany, drop the pan, that part should be in the pan. now put the part back on. on the out side of the trany find the shifter. follow that inside the trany should be on the side,on the linkage should be a place to put one end of the part thu, find the other end place the other side of the part in the linkage replace pan gaskit put pan on fill with trany fld

When i shift it feels loose like its not grabbing

its the gear linkage falling apart, or just about to fall off, get under the car and have a look at the gear box linkage keep the brakes hard on and get some body to go through the gears for you, if its just hanging off find a way to put it back on again there normaly held on by a spring clips if its poped off thats the problem

Trany not moving in first gear

That sounds like a problem with the shifter linkage. Have someone sit in the car and shift the car, with the engine off, from first to neutral and back, Go under the hood, and see if the linkage is moving with the shifter.

Manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.
