1997 transmission flush

Don't flush your transmission. Do a drain and fill. You can damage the transmission by doing a flush. There is a drain on the bottom of the transmission just take it off once drained put it back in. Fill then transmission throw the drip stick hole. To check level read the dip stick it will tell how to check it. If there is no instruction on it put the car in park and start it up. The car needs to be running to check propper level.

My 200sx is a standard transmission that wont go into reverse, what could be wrong?

Usually when your reverse is going out means some trouble internally in your transmission. I would take the transmission pan drain bolt out and check for any metallic chunks if u got some chunks you may need your transmission rebuilt by an expert, or a new transmission, its really just up to you on that call.

I have a 2003 2500hd with 8.1 motor and Allison auto trans.can you tell me what is the correct type of trans. Filter and oil (how many quarts) needed to change it all.

14.8 pints according to my online resources.
2 pints per quart means it's 7.4 Quarts total.
That's a nice transmission and engine combination.

But, I've been told by my local Quality Transmission shop, that flushing and filling is better than changing the filter and oil. And, although they work on transmissions, they leave it up to another garage to do that kind of work, because they're too busy with rebuilding transmissions.

Every 30,000 mi. the transmission should be flushed and filled with new transmission fluid, I've been told.

Local mechanic says they can't check fluid level

"Sealed" means there's no dip stick tube.
The Explorers and Lincoln LS have this also.
It is nothing new and you can still change/flush the fluid as usual.
A special procedure is used to check the fluid level.
Not having the dip stick tube is one less place for dirt to get into the transmission.

Well, that is a good sign there were no chunks in the pan.I would pull the codes out of the computer. You will need someone with a scan tool that will hook up to your vehicle, and access the diagnostic trouble codes.Once the code is identified, that gives a narrower area to look at.Yes on the fluid and filter, basically. The flush removes all of the old trans fluid, while changing the fluid and filter is changing about half the fluid, but that's just fine too.

Flush engine - transmission

Engine & Transmission Flush

You might have been told, by your dealer or mechanic that your engine oil or transmission fluid are very dirty, & an engine or transmission flush, is recommended. The flush will clean the engine or transmission, & those will last longer. This is only part true a clean engine or transmission will last longer, but I'm not sure that flushing them is the best way to clean them.

What Is An Engine Or Transmission Flush?

Flushing is forcing high pressure of fluid against the normal flow of the fluid. In simple words if the normal flow is left to right, the flush would force the fluid right to left.

This is done by connecting a machine that will force special solvents back through the engine and transmission. The idea is that by forcing cleaning solvents backwards through the system, it will get all the junk and garbage that has formed over time and "flush" it out of the system. In theory this sounds very good, but in practice, it can be dangerous.

The Dangers of Flushing your Engine or Transmission

Flush machines force high pressure cleaning solvents back through the engine and transmission and clean out some of the accumulated junk that has formed, so far all is good. Now the problems start, engines have small passages and galleries through which oil or automatic transmission fluid flow and there are one-way valves that keep the fluids from backtracking for whatever reason.

By using an aggressive cleaning procedure like flushing, large chunks of accumulated sludge are broken off and forced backwards through these galleries and valves and, more often than not, lodge tightly and block them. This cuts off the normal flow of the fluid and causes lack of lubrication in an engine and abnormal or no shifting in a transmission. The results are expensive repairs, or more often, engine or transmission replacement.

That's my knowledge about the subject, hope it was helpful,
