Question about Ford Focus

1 Answer

Intermittent tappet noise

Hi Help Team, I have a 2001 2 litre ford focus estate with the Zetec engine. The cam belt tensioner recently failed causing all 8 exhaust valves to snap and all inlet valves to be bent. The head has been professionally rebuilt but I now get an intermittent clicking which the garage say is caused by wide clearances between valve bucket shims and cams. They've had it back once and redone all the clearances but the noise persists. They are baffled but quite prepared to sort it if the problem could be identified. I was wondering - could it be a hairline crack in one of the buckets that sometimes prevents the bucket from turning when its shim is pushed down by the cam?

Have they heard the noise or just you? Not hearing the click myself, it is quite possible that the exhaust manifold gasket has a small leak due to improper torqueing, crack, defect, or warp. I would sound mechanical but is actually air and would be intermittent at the early stages. Just to make sure, get a flash light and mirror and examine the exhaust manifold assemble looking for grey or black powder. It is a long shot but could be the issue, as could be a flat cam lobe, sticking valve from a bent or damaged guide, or other unforeseen abnormal conditions such a crack in a bucket.

You could try a super oil and see if it does not go away in a week. I have had them fix issues like this as well.

SOURCE: Engine tappet clearances

According to http://freespace.virgin.net/tommy.sandham/databook.htm# Rocker Adjustment, the cold clearance is .008" intake/.018" exhaust in the non-GT 1500cc, and .012" intake/.022 exhaust on the GT. Sweet little car!!!

Timing marks for a 2001 ford focus 2 litre engine where are they and what does it look like

there is no marks!you need special knowledge and tools to timing a zetec engine.try a haynes service manual but is difficult!the cam pulleys sitting on cam shafts with conical joint!without any safe pin or tooth etc.the timing needs to lock the cam shafts and the crankshaft with two special ford tools!try to go on a good garage!!isnt so expensive.a ruined engine is the most expensive repair!

My ford focus zetec makes a rattleing noise

spraying WD40 on drive belts is not a good option as it can cause slippage it is better to use silicon spray or ordinary soap, rub the soap on the belt when the engine is stopped,as for the squeak it could well be the tensioner replace it first it may be the cheapest to start with.....hope this helps....cheers

I have a 2000 ford focus 2.0 zetec dual overhead cam with a broken timing belt at low speed. Is this engine a non interference engine?

all Zetec engines (2.0 DOHC) are NOT interference engines. There are deep reliefs cut into the top of the piston to clear the valves when they are fully extended. There will be no valve damage if the timing belt breaks on a Zetec engine.

I have a 2003 ford focus zetec and have a noisy tappet type noise when it is cold it then disapears and does not return till car has stood for about 6hours

Normal. Depending on the amount of miles, many small engines have cam taps. try switching to a slightly heavier oil. It will quiet it down most likely. Not too heavy, however. My ford probe does the same thing when cold.

Engine noise

It could be the tension pully that wears out, Its not easy to check if it is bad, but what it does is, it does not put enough tension on the serpentine belt (spring wears out). that will make it squeal all the time.get it check.
