Question about 2000 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

The shifter knob and shaft came off, it still shifts fine as long as I use the stick that is coming out from below.I noticed today that it was shifting a little different, like I was missing gears, then I noticed that the knob had turned around, then I felt the stick be like in two pieces(the boot was probobly holding it together somewhat). Anyway I twisted it back around and got it to a safe place. I pushed the boot down low so I could see what was going on. The knob and part of the stick came off. There is somewhat of a stick coming up from down below. I pushed the loose part down in there enough to drive it. I still grabbed it from the lower part until tomorrow. It's dark now and wal-mart don't carry the dome-light bulbs where I was at.

Wow, well the shift knob has two contact points. One holds it in place and the other is contacting three different linkages at different times for gear selection How Manual Transmission Works , with pieces falling out or off, it causes things not to match up the way they're supposed to. I would get that fixed ASAP before you get stranded because it won't go into gear.

Car wont shift out of park or into park easily

You mention the knob on the shifter is loose. Do you remember if the knob has always been loose or is this recent? I ask because I thought there was a button to push or a lever to lift to move the shifter into or out of R and P. So that you might not accidentally push the shifter into either of those settings and possibly damage the mechanism. If there is a lever or button, it might be that the button or lever doesn't fully disengage when you press it BECAUSE the knob on the shifter is loose. You might need to tighten the knob. Might need hex keys / Allen keys or small screwdrivers to tighten the knob. good luck.

How can I take the shifter knob off in Olds LSS

That thin slot you speak of is actually a clip. If you put a small flat screwdriver behind it and pull towards front of car, it will slide out and shifter knob comes right off.

Remove shifter knob 1998 pontiac grand prix

Hello! It's best to put the gear shifter all the way back into the 1st gear. After you do this look on the front of the shift knob, just above where it meets the shifter's shaft you will see a horizontal slot - inside this is a clip. You will need a small flat-bladed screwdriver, or a mechanic's pick to pull this clip out, but once it is removed the shift knob will come off by pulling it straight up.

Gear shifter will not go into park

There is a plastic actuator stick under the shift knob. Remove the "horse shoe" clip from the shift knob and remove knob by pulling strait up. You can twist it right and left a very small amount to loosen the knob, but not much.
Once you have the shift knob removed you will see the plastic actuator stick. Push down on the stick and put shift lever in park. If that works, the shift knob or stick is worn out.
Let me know.

Shift knob problems

When I first bought my Redline the shift knob kept coming off in my hand. Actually it flew off and would end up on the floor somewhere.

When I complained about this, they fixed the problem, and they told me that they drilled a hole through the shifter shaft up to the knob end and inserted a long bolt. They said this was the procedure to resolve this issue.

If you are having a problem removing the knob, its probably because they repaired this issue before the dealer delivered the car. Judging by their remarks to me it was not an easy repair and I'm assuming to change the shift knob would be a very difficult task.

Good luck

Stick Shift Boot

At the bottom of the shifter knob is a small plastic sleave. Move thet sleave down. It will take some pressure. When you move it down, there will may be a clip (remove clip if there is one there) and unscrew shift knob.

Removal of gear shift knob

There are two types of shift knobs. One that unscrews and one that the lower trim of the shift knob separates from the knob using a trim stick. After separating the lower trim from the knob pull upward to release the knob from the shift lever. If a new shifter assembly is being installed, unscrew the original shift knob or separate the lower trim from the knob and pull up to remove the knob from the shift lever. Screw the knob onto the new shifter assembly's lever no more than 14 turns or install the lower trim onto the shift lever then push the knob onto the shift lever and install the lower trim piece onto the shift knob.
