Question about 1986 Chevrolet K1500

I am trying to replace filter in the fuel vapor cannister in my 1986 4x4 305 auto chevy , how do I take cannister apart to replace it? Out of truck in my vice now

    Well I went to Advance Auto and bought the filter which is round and about half an inch thick looks like the filter from your furnace filter and cant see a way to put it in canister

    I always thought it was a sealed unit. I have an 86 C1500 and I actually eliminated it. I know, it might be required where you live, but I've never heard of anyone servicing it.

By your description, I would at this time have to presume that the top either snaps off or is glued on. After all these years, I'm pretty sure the old plastic will NOT be very forgiving.

sure, check your gas cap for a good seal. If good, trace the vapor hose from the cannister back to the fuel tank to check for leaks or cracked/loose hose connection. Also check the hose from the cannister to the engine intake manifold. Let me know if you have more questions.

I believe the canister is located in the rear of the car underneath on the same side as the filler neck. Its a black box thats aprox. 6 in wide and 10 in long. Its usually held in place with a strap and a 10mm bolt.

I have a 03 dodge ram 1500 and got the codes p0440 and p0441. changed gas cap. where are all the parts located


P0441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow The "EVAP purge flow" faults are issues between the carbon cannister and the intake. The EVAP leak detection generally concerns the fuel tank to carbon cannister plumbing. A little background. The EVAP or evaporative emission system is a control system to keep vapors from evaporation in the fuel tank from getting into the atmosphere. The fuel tank is not vented, but rather the vapors are piped to the carbon cannister (usually located behind the pass. side front wheel) where the charcoal element absorbs the vapor. This is actually a vapor "storage" device. Under certain engine operating conditions, the ECU activates the Cannister Purge Valve (N80) which opens and allows the engine vacuum to **** the fuel vapors back out of the carbon cannister. This purges the vapor, allowing the cannister to absorb more vapor. This evap system has been on vehicles since the '70s. As part of the OBDII standard effective for 1996 cars and newer, it was mandated that leaks in the systems must be detected and reported as a fault which will set the Check Engine Light (CEL). To detect leaks, the system is pressurized by a pump so that leaks can be detected by a lack of appropriate pressure in the system. If there is a leak, such as a cracked vent hose, loose (or leaky) gas cap, poorly installed or defective O-rings on the fuel level senders on the fuel tank, etc. a code will be set. On the cannister to intake side, leaks are detected by deviations in the idle control system. If you have leaks in the lines from the carbon cannister to the intake, intake leaks, a defective purge valve, etc you will often get purge flow faults. My first recommendation is to closely inspect all the small vacuum lines connected to the intake manifold. The corrugated plastic lines are often the culprits, as well as the fabricate covered vacuum lines. Also consider replacing the gas cap.

Strong fuel odor coming from left front fender by air filter ,also a lot of pressure build up in tank when you remove cap kmkaren56.@bellsouth.net


If the check engine light is on, take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault codes stored in the computer. Most autopart stores offer this service at no charge. There could be a problem with the evaportative emission control system. There is a charcoal cannister that stores gas vapors and when conditions are right, a purge valve opens and the vapors are used in the combustion process. The cannister can get full of vapors and if the valve/solenoid is bad, it cannot purge itself of the vapors. Also integral to the system is the gas cap. A faulty gas cap can cause problems within this system. I am not saying that the evap system is the cause, but the pressure build up in the tank makes me suspicious. Get the codes read and it will help narrow things down for you. Sure hope this helped and best wishes.

I have a p0441 fault on my 2003 dodge neon. i changed the canister purge solenoid and the light went off for about a month and just came back on what could cause this?

Service engine soon light comes on, checked with a meter and it is showing evaporative purge control valve circuit, what is it talking about


The EVAPORATIVE PURGE CONTROL VALVE is located under the hood usually behind or near the back of the headlights. It it on the top of the Evap Charcol Cannister ( shaped something like a Quaker Oats box ) . Basically does not allow fuel vapors to escape into the air. Te purge valve will recycle the vapors through a charcol filter and sent to be reused as fuel., Problem could be caused by excessive fuel in the cannister, or the solenoid, or wiring, etc back to the computer.. Requires a lot of diagnosing. Hope this helps.

I have 1990 chevy pickup 1500 4 wheel 350 eng. throttle body inj. the truck started missing and stalling i changed fuel filter and it ran good for 2 days then started the same thing so i changed fuel pump...


It sounds like the engine is pulling fuel from the tank, and not replacing it with air, causing a vacuum to build in the tank. The vacuum, may build to the point that it resists the fuel pump's efforts to **** fuel from it. If the vacuum is sufficient, it may collapse the tank, or expand the fuel enough for the engine manifold vacuum to **** raw gas into the evaporative emissions control system, hence the cannister.

Replacing the fuel pump, and filter will both break this vacuum, and make it run well for a few more miles, until the vacuum builds again.

The tank is usually vented to relieve pressure and vacuum through the gas cap.

Basically, sounds like a bad gas cap.

Try driving with the cap loose or removed. If that fixes it, buy a new cap. Preferably a locking one, as the amount of fuel these trucks hold is pretty tempting to less than honest folks. My 1990 C2500 has a 34 gallon tank.

Coil?? with the other symptoms, how'd you come up with that?

this is most likly a 02 sencer but no the filter is inline and if you would like to find out the check engine light autozone or advance auto can read the syatem for you for free and tell you what is happing
