Question about 2004 Mercury Sable
Loosen the bolt on the alternator until it slips freeing the belts tension, from there slip it off all the pulley's and put the new one on the same way. you may need a crow bar or something similar to apply force to the alternator to get the belt tight again while tightening the bolt you loosened earlier to loosen the belt. Make sure that every bolt or nut that you loosened is tight again. If your an average male; apply near all your strength onto the alternator to tighten the belt, just not all of it or you will over tighten it. If your a female: take your anger out on it, you won't break it, and if you do, i wouldn't want to get into a fight with you. BFD8B15.gif

Look on the underside of the hood - sometimes on the radiator shroud - there should be a decal.

there should be a diagram of the belt under the hood : ibelieve it is on top of the radiator fan cover.
A merc dealer should be able to give you a print out. Or maybe an auto parts store.

There are also two serpentine belt types for the 2002 sable. The S and U type engine. Take the old belt with you the the parts store. As for the diagram, I googled it under images and about a dozen correct ones came up. Remember the 2002 sable is the same as the 2002 Tarus.

here are the diagrams for the 2 engines. the first on is for the 24 valve engine, the second is for the 12 valve engine. if your oil filter is short and fat use the first one, if its tall and skinny use the 2nd one.
