Hi, It could be the coil that has a problem. There are so many things other then the coil would cause the miss and stalling you are taking about. It could be a plug wire, spark plugs, fuel injector, cap or rotor, just to many thinks that could cause this.Timing belt, and much more. I know you are looking for a quick fix and I wish I could offer you one, but whens the last time you had a tune up on this auto? You might want to call around for a well known Mechanic and have them put it on a scope to pin point the problem. Get a written estimate on the cost first. If you want to wait till dark one night and have some one with you, start the car and see if you see any blue sparking coming from any where at all. It could be a cracked plug wire or coil wire and you may get lucky. I have done this and solved lots of misfires by doing this. You may not find anything. Just make sure it it very dark and see. Keep me posted, and I will wait for your response.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

It may be that complicated but have you tryied the recommended maintenance yet?

RECOMENDATION:

Fuel Filter, PVC Valve and Air filter change.
Tune up would include Spark Plugs.

Hope this tip helps.

If you have not yet, go ahead and check your wires and spark plugs, to do that pull out the spark plug, turn the car on (don't worry it wont shoot flames out, the spark-plug isn't in it to ignite the flame), and with the spark plug in the wire, touch the spark plug to the head, valve cover, frame etc., to get a ground. Try several times if there is no spark, after checking all of them (one at a time so you don't confuse the wires, very important), go to the next possibility of it being the wires and do the same with the wire 1-2mm away from contacting a ground (first expose all wires with the car off), If all are still good than it could be your coil pack (replacement of the distributer). Remember though when checking the spark plugs, though you might have a spark, you wont be able to tell all the time but it could be a weak spark and that will also effect it. cheapest way to eliminate possibilties is to replace the spark plugs anyway, it always helps with gas saving. I believe it's autozone, schucks or napa that do a free diagnostic on your car, but if its a bad wire or anything i listed then it will probably come up as a cylinder misfire. hope i helped, if not, sorry for the wasted time.

Sounds like a bad PCV valve or bad EGR valve. replace the PCV valve ( about $10) locate and watch the EGR valve .. it should move up and down when you rev the engine.. spray the shaft with WD40 if its sluggish or stuck.. it may help.

I would start with the coils. Almost all problems seem to be from that area. Maybe buy one at car salvage and shot gun it out. I think it's worth a try. Need to start eliminating possible causes. Yes alot of codes - need to find a commom dinomatator. Good luck

2004 F150 5.4L engine misfire

The concern is likely caused by the coil which sits on top of the spark plug. Your P0301 indicated misfire on cylinder 1. Your P0316 indicated it occurs on the first 1000 revolutions. Your P0171 indicated lean on bank one. Bank one includes cylinders 1,2,3 and 4. Your lean code is strange but could be related to misfire. I would recommend swap the coil on number one with number two. Clear the code and drive it. I would expect to see a P0302 which indicates the misfire traveled with bad coil. good luck.
