Question about 2003 Honda Pilot

1 Answer

Ignition problem I have a 2003 Pilot. The key wasn't consistently turning, but when it did the car started. I replaced the ignition switch. The key turns, starter motor runs, but the engine doesn't run. As far as I know, all connections have been made.

It turns out that the anti-theft computer system had to be re-progammed for the new key. My Haynes manual did not mention that fact and no advisement was included with the new switch, Which cost $257.00.

I took my old switch to a locksmith. He rebuilt the key switch. My old keys were worn down. He was able to cut me a new key to my old switch using the code for the key found on the glove box latch assembly. He coded the key he made. Total cost was $134.00.

In the future I will call a locksmith for any key or lock problem I have on a car.

Thanks to everyone who pondered a solution.

When you have made this connection, probably there has been a short circuit, without seeing it so due to that, fuses have blown, check the fuses box ,you will see it one by one to be sure you don't miss one.

2003 honda pilot. After the car is turned off the key will not turn far enough to allow it to come out of the ignition.

try to remove the shifter from park and then back.there is a cable that runs from the shifter to the ignition switch to prevent removing the key without vehicle shifter in park. if it is the electronic type, then the switch located at the shifter is busted. the problem is most likely at the shifter

Your steering wheel key cylinder is bad. You will need to replace it, but when you replace the key cylinder the Honda Dealer might need to reprogram all your keys to the car again or the car will not start.
good luck

Unable to turn key in ignition to start 2003 Honda Pilot .

Your ignition lock cylinder probably fell apart. They get worn out and the tumblers inside fall out and leave the cylinder inoperable. Get your lock cylinder replaced and you'll be good as new.

Your car uses a transonder key, a key with a small chip embedded inside. The transponder is matched to the immobilizer unit in your car. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the immobilizer searches for that transponder, if it's not near the ignition, the car will just keep turning over and not start. Your only real options are to replace the steering lock or buy a transponder bypass unit, which I do not recommend. Just do a google search.

Dealer cut a new key for Pilot but it won't work

If the key fits mechanically, and the lock turns, then the key has been cut correctly. However if it just won't start the vehicle, then the transponder chip within the key will need programming. The dealer should have the equipment to do this. Do not accept a key that does not start the car - and certainly don't pay unless it does.

Make sure it's fully in park. Try wiggling the steering wheel as you turn the key.

Ignition switch repairs

Once the dealer hooks up their computer and activates the ignition you shouldn't need to go back, The code that you were given is usually just a temp code to get you to the dealer.
