One of three (3) possibitlies:
1. Catalytic Converter is malfunctioning.
2. O2 Sensor is malfunctioning. This will be the O2 Sensor located on the Catalytic Converter. However you should check and/or replace both sensors if needed.
3. You have an Exhaust Leak.
In Order of checking:
A. Check and Repair any Exhaust Leak.
B. Replace the O2 Sensor on the Catalytic Converter 1st. Also Known as the Downstream O2 Sensor or HO2 Sensor.
C. Replace the O2 on the Exhaust Manifold prior to the Catalytic Converter. Also Known as the Upstream O2 Sensor.
D. Replace the Catalytic Converter.

Most Auto Part Stores (Advance Auto, Autozone etc.) have OBD and DRB Scanning Tool's that they will hook up for free, as long as the Engine Light is on. These will let you know which 02 Sensor is Bad or IF the Catalytic Converter is bad.

The Catalytic Converter usually last the lifetime of the car. I've seen the O2 Sensor(s) replacement work more than the Catalytic Converter replacement. Also I've seen where people have replaced the O2 Sensors and Converter, only to find out their Exhaust was leaking.

The o2 sensor at bank 2 by catalytic converter, sending a signal that the converter efficiency is below threshold. Hope this helps.

Code po430

PO420 right exhaust converter failed
PO430 left exhaust converter failed
You can Google any codes you get & study/learn
whatever
The converter should last closer to 15 years ,so I suspect
the motor hasn't run well for some parts of it's lifetime
Too much fuel & cylinder misfires ruin converters
This is a growing problem as people just never work on
vehicles any more until they break down.
The new technology of the last 30 years won't compensate
for that,in fact they require a lot of checking over at least 3 times
a year.

98 es 300 read a code of p0420,what could cause this to come up as a false reading?

PO420 & PO430 --are worn out Exhaust Converters

You can research any Generic OBD2 Codes on the
internet & learn more than you need to know

A Converter is only good for 12 years & will only pass
inspection MAYBE for 14 years

O2 Sensor Codes are PO170 thru PO 175, so you
may want to study on your own, as you were given
useless advice

I have a po430 code bank 2 what 02 sensor is it?

P0430 is a catalytic converter inefficiency code for bank 2.

You didn't list a year make and model but I do see you have a GM. It is not an O2 sensor. It is the catalytic converter. You can confirm this by watching O2 data with scan tool. If the downstream O2 sensor switches simular to the upstream than the Cat is no longer doing its job.

Bank 1 always refers to the same side of the engine as the number 1 cylinder. Bank 2 is the opposite side. again without a year make and model that is about as detailed as I can get.

Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for using fixya.com.

Code of PO174 1 system too lean (bank 1) Code PO420 Catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1) Code PO430 Catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 2)

hi,my friend, you can try,

Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.

Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).

Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary

Replace the catalytic converter

Sounds like you have low fuel supply or a leak in intake system causing lean codes, check fuek pressure and volume first. Cat converter effeciancy could be caused by the lean codes, purge system sounds like solenoid failure, check for high resistance accross purge vent solenoid.
