What does the air pump on a 2001 Chevrolet impala do?

Air injection pumps or "smog pumps" as they are commonly called, are emissions devices used to clean up and aid in the burning of emissions such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. These pumps inject clean air into the exhaust system to aid the catalytic converter in burning the excess emissions created at certain times of a vehicles operation.

1993 S10 Blazer with a Vortec Enginer V6 4.3L. Changed the Injector Assembly, Plinum Gasket, Plugs, O2 Sensor, Catalytic Converter. Still won't pass emissions test. What am I missing?

The problemis usually related to a EVAP problem. Such as a Vaccuum leak, bad EGR valve. The most common problem for these trucks is the EVAP canister in the rear of the truck or the vac lines going to or from it also the EGR valve gets clogged or stuck. If you get the truck scanned it should give a code then you will know where to look.

1986 camaro emissions problem- 6 cylinder stick

high hydrocarbons indicates head gasket(1 or both) leaking , carbon monoxide is a worn out catylitic convertor which both could lead to the oxy sensor getting a false reading

You can safely remove the convertor as you asked but depending on your location your vehicle may not pass a safety or emissions inspection.
