At the top, there will be there studs, with nuts, they have to be removed(the nuts)This is in the strut tower, under the hood,Of course support the vehicle up on the side you are working on first, and support, with a floor jack, the lower a frame.Remove, either a pinch bolt at the other end, near the spindle,or it will be two bolts going threw the strut attaching it to the spindle, this will be lowered, and removed from the vehicle as a strut module, top bearing plate, and coil spring, and strut. Then using a strut spring compression tool, remove the spring, and install the new strut in reverse order,Now if the strut has the pinch bolt attaching it to the spindle, you will be fine,as there will be no alignment needed, but if it has the two bolts mounting it on the spindle, you will need an alignment.

SOURCE: Do shocks and struts on a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer

While there is nothing to prevent the replacing of an individual shock or strut, it is not recommended. All four do not have to be replaced at the same time. At the very least they should be replaced in pairs, left and right.

SOURCE: cannot get control arm to swing forward to replace

  • The control arm don't spring forward. After you remover the bolt off the lower ball joint you want to get in there and spread that "Y" mount for the lower ball joint bolt apart a bit so it will move down easier.
  • Now you need to get a tough long pry bar and get between the lower ball joint and the spindle and pry down on the control arm like there is no tomorrow. It will move down slowly but surely and eventually the control arm will get low enough that the spindle can be pulled forward enough to drop it out. It's a complete pain.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Since my front struts were replace, I've had this rubbing sound coming from my front end. I've had my brakes and struts checked (by the shop that did the replacement) and have been told there's nothing...

Rubbing noise or grinding? Is it louder going around corners? It sounds like it could be the wheel bearings, and if it is indeed the wheel bearings, then yes, you need to get them replaced asap. Wheel bearing failure can cause the wheel to come off of the vehicle, hub and all.

Changing front struts

this is best done with a strut spring compressor if you don't have one, do not atempt this operation at home. the springs on the struts need to be compressed to allow the nut to be removed and the new strut be installed. if you still want to do this your self call an independent garage and see if they will compress the springs and change the struts for you. then you can remove and reassemble them at home. also some automotive part stores have machine shop to do this for you. again do not remove the nut on the strut without the spring being compressed properly this is very dangerous. ken!
