The rubber hose between the door post(inside black boot) may be perished allowing air to leak and no suction or the pump unit on door may be faulty, do you hear any noise if working the locking(put your ear near hinge area of door inside or out.If there is hissing it's the faulty pipe and no noise pump or corrosion on socket.

SOURCE: 2006 passat door lock problem

One of my rear door locks has the same problem, It just stopped working for no reason. Now the the only way to open the door is from inside, which confirms the child lock is not on.

Please let me know if you have a cure.

The rear right hand side door will not unlock and cannot be opened from the inside or outside all other doord are operating properly. the car is a vw passat 02

My 1998 passat done the left rear and drivers side then all.Take out the drivers side lock barrel, open door and undo 1 torx screw until it stops(it cant be removed fully) and then pull the handle lightly half way and wiggle the barrel out.Spray wd40 onto the inner bits and try get it into the plastic slot area(operates the sensors that cause this problem) . Put back and tighten up and then do this to all doors.Lubricate all door lock catches by spraying wd40 into every hole or orfice you see and that should help.

Door in back cant open from outside and inside

I'm sure VW had a recall to replace door lock mechanisms around that age, check with your dealer. If the door and window on the same door are not working it could be lack of power to that door, check the wiring harness connection is still plugged in and ok on the b pillar (b pillar is the vertical panel between front and rear door), remove rubber gaitor bellows and check connections.

1999 Volkswagen Passat inside inner door panel

You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. If needed, you can pull back the weather seal (can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to access everything inside the door

Check the wiring between the door and the post - common problem is that these wires fray.
