My 2000 BMW 328i was off the road for 3 years stored in an out-door garage. Recently asked a mechanic to look at it , he said it needed several parts, which I bought. However, he now says it needs an instrument cluster. Don't understand why, since the car was in working order when it was placed in storage! Also found that some of the windows don't work, and there is no horn or ac working. The driver's seat wasn't working and had him check the fuses after which it worked. He currently has the instrument cluster panel and guages disconnected, but the car can still drive. Last night I took the car to get it cleaned and the car shut down. It finally restarted an hour later and was able to make it there. My question is, do I really need to by an instrument cluster, or can it be some problem with the fuses? Also, does this panel also control the AC and the horn? I am alittle suspicious of the mechanic and wondering if he is taking me for a ride because I am a woman. He says the cluster will cost me $2500!

I cant make any assumptions about the repairs your mechanic is attempting
to your vehicle. It does sound a bit odd and the price of the instrument cluster does seem costly. We service BMW's at my shop and your issues sounds out of the ordinary,I would suggest you get a second opinion. If you were in north carolina we would diagnose it for free.

BMW Power Locks don't work, how much to repair?

Before you bring it to a garage and pay good money check the fuses. Usually its as simple as that (located near the battery in the engine bay)

Hope this helps.

Doors on 2007 BMW 328i will not unlock

hey solo, 06-07 door lock actuators can blow a fuse in the glove box. bmw does have a specific bulletin that addresses this issue and requires replacing the fuse if blown and measure the resistance of all the door lock actuators to determine which is bad. the doors should be able to be opened with the key mechanically. if not for some reason, you should be able to comfort open the windows and will have to crawl inside the car. the fuse panel is inside the glove box and not fun to get to. I believe the fuse is a 10 or 15 amp fuse maybe 5th from the bottem right.
