Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf
Sounds like when they replaced the engine some of the clamps and mountings should have been replaced as well. The clutch should certainly have been replaced. First to second is almost always a big change under acceleration so it is probably an engine mounting that is making the noise as sounding like a big clunk, the connection between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe is probably where the other noise is coming from. It is a spring loaded joint and does take a hammering when one of the mountings go bad.
