Question about 2006 Volkswagen Passat
Common fault with VW's firstly check the door seal at the bottom and make sure it is not wet inside.
Next place is under the bonnet, just under the windscreen below the wipers you will see a long tray the "skuttle panel" leafs and muck build up in here where the drain plugs are once they get blocked the water starts coming in the car from behind the dash board. You should be able to see the problem visibly and it should be easy to clean.
I had this on a golf about 2mths ago, and a polo a while ago and also on a few passats.

I had the exact same problem last weekend after the heavy rain. I also have a 2006 vw passat 2.0 tdi. I checked the other footwells (rear and passanger) and they were dry. The ceiling and all trims were dry so it appears to be coming from somwehere under the bonnet.
Have been to VW for a Fault Diagnosis but they say they will need it for a day to take out the carpet and water test the area to see where it's coming in. Sounds expensive as they charge £130 an hour. May have to use a local garage.
VW were able to rule out the problems that were known on the pre 2005 Passat (mainly the Pollen Filter Seal coming loose).
If I make any progress I'll post feedback here.

I had this problem with my 2003 VW Polo 2 years ago and had water coming in through the drivers side and leaving a large pool in the rear footwell. I took it to VW who did a water test and found (so they say) a leak coming in through the seal (?!) under the bonnet and charged me over £500 to sort it out and replace the underlay under the carpet in the footwells (that was £100, ripoff!) as they said it had gone mouldy! Had it fixed and hasn't happened since. Not happy that it was just out of warranty!

Shut off your Volkswagen Passat before replacing a fuse. Find the fuse box on the driver's side of the car, under a plastic cover on dashboard to the left side, door open.
