Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero
Sounds characteristic of a BAD speed sensor in one of your wheel hubs. Unfortunately, there's no simple solution to replacing a speed sensor. You either have to replace the entire wheel hub in which the bad sensor is located, or if it's a bad wire in the pigtail you will need to replace the pigtail. In a 2001 my money would be on having to replace one of your front wheel hubs. It can be a one hour job, or a three hour job depending on how hard it is to remove the bad wheel hub. You will first need to have a shop run the diagnostics. AutoZone and the like only run the simple diagnostics, but Minekie advertizes that they will run the diagnostics FREE. A shop will charge between $300 and $425 to replace a wheel hub, depending if you want the Chineese bearing or Timkin bearing. You can buy the part yourself for between $50 and $100 at most autoparts stores.
It's not an easy fix, but one most Alero and GrandAm owners have plenty of experience with.
