There is a white reset button in the back where your back window washer is its on a black box try pushing that then wait till it blinks or goes off if not that then check the connection on the transfer case see if it is corroded or dirty.

SOURCE: the 4x4 does not work. when I turn the switch on

there could be a vacuum leak for the front diff actuator . if the actuator does not engage it will not switch into 4x4

SOURCE: the 4x4 four system will not engage at all.

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vacuum is removed the spring engages the IWE.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
- Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vacuum lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vacuum line on.
-Check the vent line ( tube that is routed into the engine compartment with nothing attached to it ), for blockages.
-If the vent line is clear, and with the vacuum lines off the IWE should be engaged ( both front wheels locked ).
-If they lock, the problem is with the IWE solenoid not shutting off vacuum to the IWEs. There is a TSB on the 2004-2006 IWE solenoids, a newer revision has been made, and used from 2007 and newer MYs.

- If the front drive shaft turns:
-Check the fuses for the 4WD system ( If ESOF system ) . These are #11, #29, #30 and #111. Use a meter to check the fuses while plugged in, there are pins on the back of the fuse for this. Use a known good ground and check each side of the fuse with the other meter probe, with the meter set to V-DC ( check the scale if a setting that it will read at least 13 V DC ).
-With the key on, if the ESOF system have someone turn the mode selector from 2WD to 4WD while hitting the transfer case with a dead blow hammer ( do not use a metal hammer, it can damage the transfer case ). Some times the shift motor will get stuck ( lack of use ? ) and the dead blown hammer will free it up.
-There are 2 relays ( in the small engine compartment fuse / relay panel - ESOF only ) for the 4WD system, one is the CW ( **** Wise ) one is the CCW ( Counter Clock Wise ). These are full size relays, that can be bench tested, or a quick remove and replace test with the high beam relay in the cab fuse panel ( Relays R03 ). 1 at a time, remove the CW & CCW relays and install them in the position for the high beam relay, and test the high beams by pulling back on the MFS ( MultiFunction Switch ). If the high beams work with both relays, the CW & CCW relays are not the issue ).
-Check the connector on the transfer case for the shift motor, to make sure it is not corroded.

There is a TSB for the 04-06 MY trucks, here it is in PDF format

Here is the block diagram for the IWE vacuum system

I have a 1998 f 150 4x4 and four wheel drive wont engage no lights either

Have an assistant, lie SAFELY under the truck with a small hammer and GENTLY tap the motor on the 4X4 unit while you engage and disengage the 4X4 switch. Key on engine off in Park with foot brake set and brake pedal depressed.

My moms explorer- when she turns hard left or right she gets a rubbing sound like from the tires bit thats not whats rubbing. it sounds like the 4x4 is engaging. she has to back up about 15-30 feet to fix...

No fuse wont help, this sounds like the 4wd is engaged, the front axle hubs need to be checked or the front axle actuator may be stuck, there are a few things that can cause this problem and if its all wheel drive that makes things harder to check out, soory theres no easy fix without having it looked at.also make sure all the tires have the proper amount of air in them 35psi is good, hope this helps.

if you have an electric transfer switch start by checking the fuse, next if you have access to a lift
great if not on paved level ground jack it up onto 4
jack stands, have a helper get in the trk. to operate
the sw. check for pwr. at the shift moter if good start
trk. engage 4wd moter + see if the output shaft is
turning from the trans case to front differentialif it is
you may have a bad frt. hub. also if you have a manual shift case make all linkage is working to
the case the rest is the same. hope this helps
good luck.

I have Ford Ranger Supercab 2001. The 4wd does not engage.. clicking sounds from under the dash board. Please help :)

When you turn the dial to 4 wheel drive it controls a solonoid unit that then controls the electric motor that shifts the trasfer case to 4X4. The clicking sound that you are hearing is probobly the solonoid unit (4x4 control unit) engaging or trying to engage the trasfer case motor. From what I,ve heard the solonoid unit is located behind the plastic panel that is under the glove box and before the passenger side door. Moisture can build up in that area and ruin the solinoid unit over time. Check any fuses that have any thing to do with the 4x4. If the solonoid unit or fuses is not the problem, I would check the wireing to the electric transfer case motor and the motor itself. Good luck and God bless!

You can check to see if there is a relay or maxi fuse in the engine compartment. The circuits/solenoids are known to go out alot in these in the fords.
