Question about Cadillac DeVille

My 97 Cadillac Deville was reading a P0300 code. Changed out the TPS which seemed to help a bit (plus the old TPS fell apart when I changed it lol), but the car is acting up again. I need step-by-step instructions on how to locate, remove/replace and clean my EGR valve. If cleaning/replacing the valve doesn't work, I'll let you know what the new symptoms are as they come up.

P0300 is a random misfire code. It is always a cylinder specific misfire, One of your cylinders has a slight mis and your computer registered it at a certian RPM. In time if it gets worse you will get a number between 301 to 308. Then you will know exactly what cylinder is the problem

All the data will be stored at the time of the misfire to help determine if you have a idle issue or a higher rpm issue.

This has nothing to do with the egr unless you can determine the fault occured at idle.

If the egr was open at idle you would have a code for it and it would idle real rough and smooth out at higher RPM's Its suppose to be open cruising only.

Most likely your problem is a spark plug, injector, coil, or ignition module or intake manifold gasket vacuum leak.

This is providing you have no other issue like a sticking valve or small head gasket leak.

A data scanner will tell whether or not the egr is stuck open and a data scanner will tell you if all your sensors are ok or not.

You can throw parts at this all day put if you don't know what the criteria is for setting a code you will never be able to get to the source without spending lots of money.

The longer this misfire occurs the more damage that will be done to the catalytic converter then you will set a p0420 cat ineffenciency code.

On a car this old its possible the cat is borderline getting ready to be replaced and a misfire can set it over the limit.

I don't think you really understand what this fault code means, it means that likely all the engine cylinders are misfiring at random no set pattern, not any particular cylinder. I would start with checking for engine vacuum leaks like the intake manifold gasket. that is all I can say since you provided no make, model or year and engine type and size information.

I have an 02 deville I just gave it a tune up changed.both ignition coils and the two head valve gasket n now it still reads code p0300 and 2 new ones p0171 and p0174. Can someone help and my check coolant...


The floats on those reservoirs are bad to stick because of the sealer you have to keep adding to the fluid. I got mine unstuck by removing it the reservoir and thoroughly cleaning it with dish soap. Good luck. I could not see a way to remove or replace the float.

I would have the fluid changed at a shop that flushes out the old fluid and replaces it with new fluid, without having to remove the drain pan and filter. This is recommended every 30,000 mi.

Have a 1988 Cadillac DeVille 4.5L TBI. It's stalling and hesitating when put in gear. Changed plugs,cap,rotor, and wires. still has an issue. service light comes on and goes off and comes on again....


Changing the fuel filter isn't a bad idea prior to getting into the O2 sensor. You may want to consider replacing the TPS (throttle position sensor). Do an on board diagnostic test to identify the areas of concern. Most likely you'll get error codes for both the MAF sensor and the TPS.

The TPS is on the throttle body. Remove the old one and reinstall the new one. Next set the voltage to 1.5 at the idle mode with a ohm volt meter & your done

I have a 95 Cadilliac DeVille 4.9 high idle , I have changed the ISC and new plugs, wires. Also have cleanded the carburator, what would cause this?


The tps and isc motor have to be set a certain way to work like they are supposed to. The voltage output of the tps must be set with the ics motor not contacting the throttle lever. Then the ics motor plunger must be at its highest setting and adjusted to the correct tps setting of that point. You will need to read a service manual to perform this operation and get the correct settings.
