Question about 2002 GMC Yukon XL

2 Answers

Is there a switch or relay that kicks on/off the alternator on on a 2002 GMC Yukon XL? Problem: Battery drains while driving (or just warming up) and engine dies. Occurs only after startup on cold mornings. At startup, voltmeter gauge does not jump to 14+ as normal and gradually drops until engine dies - as if alternator not kicking in. Reving engine has no effect. I recharge battery, start engine, and things work fine (voltmeter immediately goes to 14+ and stays there) and can drive all day. The next 'cold' morning at startup, voltmeter again fails to jump to 14+ and gradually drops until engine dies. Does not occur on warm days. Alternator was replaced but problem continues. Battery cables checked with amp/ohm meters - good.

2002 Yukon XL Alternator switch question: Shouldn't be a battery issue since: 1. Battery tests ok and holds its charge for an extentended period when at rest. 2. The battery does holds its charge at times (as long as the voltmeter gauge on the indtrument panel reads 14+). 3. Wnen the battery does drain, its only after a cold-weather engine start and the voltmeter gauge fails to jump to 14+ (and hold constatn) right after the engine starts running. Instead, the gauge gradually drops (battery draining) and engine dies after a few minutes.

Update to Yukon 2002 alternator issue: Over the past week, when I start the engine, the voltmeter initially jumps to 10 then gradually drops to less than 9 over a matter of minutes. But just before the engine dies, you can hear the altenator kick in and the voltmeter jumps to 14, then promptly drops to 9 then jumps back to 14 and then stays there for the duration. Next morning, this repeats itself.

Is there a low-voltage sensor or some other sensor that could be abnormally kicking in and out due to the cold morning temps? If so, do I need to replace this sensor?

It sounds like your battery is going bad. When you accelerate the alternator spins faster generating more electricity. Take it to a auto parts store and they can do a free test to confirm what needs to be replaced.

The parking lights on our 2001 GMC Yukon XL stay on after turning the vehicle off. This drains the battery down to prevent starting again. What is wrong?

Hi, there is a park relay in middle of the interior relay box under the dash to the left of the steering column. This is shown on page 6-61 of your owner's manual (http://www.extendedgmwarranty.com/owners-manual/gmc/2001-GMC-Yukon-Denali.pdf)
With the battery connected, pull out the relay and push it back in. If it clicks when you do this, the headlight switch is bad. If it doesn't click, the relay is bad. Try swapping the relay with another similar relay, such as the horn or A/C relay. If that solves the problem you need a relay. If not, you need a switch. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Air compressor not kicking on full of freon replaced pressure switch on accumalater can ground relay and will come on replaced relay still wont come on

Check voltage to pressure switch at relay and at fuse. you may have a bad electrical connection bad wire or blown fuse. Also check the clearance between the clutch and pulley, you didn't say if compressor clutch pulling in. Might have multiple problems, check switch at dash as well. Last year I had A/C prob.s and found out GM had problems with the fan cool/heat controller on my Yukon XL. Replaced it free, but all other work was at cost. Hope this helps.

2002 Gmc Yukon xl. Drove it one morning and returned home than ten mins. later went to start it and nothing. Dead. Turn key to on and all dash lights go our and nothing. Doesnt crank or anything. ...

Take the battery out of it and go to a auto store to get it checked, they do that free, but you might need to get it charged or get a new battery. If it clicks then it's definitely the battery, otherwise it could be something completely different.

Things to consider
-oil change?
-last tuned up?
-battery age?
-Alternator?
-check fuses?
-are you aggressive while driving it, that can cause internal engine problems over the years.

hope it helps.

Needs a jump every day

It sounds like the battery has a dead cell in it. Replace the battery. If you have an alarm installed remove the in line fuse from the alarm and see if that stops the battery drain.
