If you have hubs you will need to lock the in and shift it to h4w , drive forward 20 feet then back up same repeat do the same to take it out of 4wd. this is a MUST..

ON THE FRONT AXLE THERE IS A SOLENOID THAT ENGAGES THE FRONT AXLE IT IS ON THE PUMPKIN, IF BAD- ITS A EASY CHEAP FIX,,.. THESE GO BAD WHEN YOU DO SHIFT ON THE FLY. OR WITH TRUCK IN PARK SHIFT LEVER INTO 4H THEN DRIVE FORWARD AND BACK 20 FEET DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES. IT JUST MAY BE STICKY. ITS A GOOD IDEA TO ENGAGE THE 4WD EVERY OTHER MONTH OR SO. THIS WILL KEEP IT FREE AND IT WILL WORK WHEN YOU NEED IT... TRY THIS AND GET BACK TO ME

SOURCE: 2000 GMC Jimmy Transmission Whine

I recently took my vehicle to a transmission shop and they had to rebuilt the transmission right through. I was recently told that the transmission is a common problem in these vehicles. Sad that GM can not fix or recall the transmisison since there is a problem.

SOURCE: The 4-wheel drive on our 2001 GMC Jimmy does not

First and foremost can you tell me if the lights are showing up on the 4x4 selector switch ? Second if they are illuminated ( should be in 2-Hi ) when you select to go into 4-Hi or 4-Low does the selection flash? And Lastly can you hear a sound of any type (clicking, ticking, thumping) when you push the button?

4wd will not engage on my 2001 gmc jimmy

Try listening to the transfer case try to engage. The vacuum actuater on the firewall above the distributor was not allowing vacuum to the front axle actator. You can put the truck on jackstands (all 4 wheels) and check to see if the front drive shaft engages. If so, then it's probably the vacuum actuator or the axle actuator.

1996 gmc jimmy started making noise sounding like it is is right front was told need to replace wheel hub which was done. Still making the same noise in 2 wheel drive. when you push button for 4 wheel...

Sounds like your front axle is trying to engage but does not engage fully.check your vacuum going to the t-case switch and then if that is ok check your vacuum at the front axle actuator. It is located under the battery tray.

You should be able to put in 4x4 while in drive less than 35mph. Mine had a switch to turn to engage or dis-engage.

2000 GMC Jimmy Transmission Whine

Does it sound like a loud winding sound coming from the front right side? I have a 2001 Jimmy and the 4wd tries to engage when driving up steep hills and going at highway speeds. The actuator vacuum switch engaged when the transfer case vacuum switch sends the vacuumed air to the actuator. What is happening is their is either a leak in the vacuum lines, a faulty actuator switch, or a faulty transfer case vacuum switch. When the jimmy has enough air pulling in, the extra vacuum is trying to push the actuator switch in when it is not supposed to. It is a much cheaper fix than a transmission. GMC should have recalled the whole 4wd system on any of the S10's, the JImmy's, and Blazers.
