Question about Lexus LS 400

I have an LS400, 1995 model. Sometime ago, it started slipping when I put the gear on D, or any other forward position (no problem with Reverse). Sometimes, it just doesn't give any problesm, sometimes it does. When it is slipping, it is as if it is on neutral. Everytime this happens and I step on the gas pedal and accelerate, it suddenly kicks into gear. Thanks so much for any guidance you can give. Joseph

    additionally to my desciption of the slipping of the transmission, i do have another problem which is that when i turn the engine on, even in warm weather, it takes 5 minutes for the engine RPM get down from 1200 to 700. is this electronically controlled or is there a way to reduce this?

Check the fluid level,if it is fine,have the transmission filter,and fluid changed,this sounds like a hydraulic problem in the transmission.

Should you find your transmission slipping, don't despair. A transmission that slips doesn't always mean that your transmission is on its last leg. There are a few things to try before automatically forking over the money to buy a new transmission. First of all, check your transmission fluid. The color of clean transmission fluid is red in color. A brownish fluid color indicates that the transmission fluid has outlived its useful life and needs to be changed promptly. To fully exchange the fluid in your transmission, you will need to have your transmission fluid flushed. When you empty the fluid from the transmission pan, you still have fluid in the torque converter and transmission cooler lines. This fluid can only be removed by a flush. You could technically keep draining the pan every few weeks and refilling with new transmission fluid, but you will only be diluting the old fluid out. This is better if you can't afford the cost of a flush all at once, but is only advisable on transmission pans that have a drain plug built into the pan, otherwise you will need to replace the transmission pan gasket every time. Regardless, if you change the fluid you need to also replace the transmission filter. This is a pretty straight forward process on most vehicles. Just make sure the fluid is warm, but not hot or you may burn yourself. Usually just changing the transmission fluid alone won't keep your transmission from slipping anymore. If some of your transmission seals are bad, you'll need to find an additive, such as Lucas Transmission Fix, to help condition those seals and make them seal fluid once again. If your vehicle calls for adjusting the bands when servicing the transmission, this may help with your slipping problem. Make sure that your transmission cooler fins are clear of debris. Keeping your transmission fluid as cool as possible helps prevent detrimental effects to your transmission. Transmission fluid that gets too hot will cause the fluid to start to break down. Also make sure that the fluid level in your transmission is at the correct level. Hopefully, some of these tips will keep your transmission from slipping for some time.

The car has an automatic transmission and all of a sudden i had no reverse had no slipping or nothing the drive gears work fine no slipping grinding nothing shifts through all gears just fine


It may just need servicing/adjusting.

Your reverse gear is actually first gear ... when you select reverse another 'cog' fits into the toothed wheels to change the direction of first gear ... to give you reverse...

It may be a sticky valve or just a bit of adjustment (workshop job..) that is required.

What you can try ..

Start the car ... move the lever through all the positions several times (foot on brake..). Keep your foot on the brake and then put it in reverse and rev the car. Hard!

Try doing it several times.

An auto transmission works on valves opening and closing. Reverse gear - in comparison with the forward gears - is seldom used. The reverse valve can 'stick'. Try forcing it to open ... frighten it ... but keep your foot on the brake...

Shudder in reverse and seems to be slipping forward gears good


It is an auto I take it and the problem will be a reverse band/clutch pack solenoid servo. It it is a manual then the clutch works the same way in forward and reverse so if it was slipping in reverse ,it would also be slipping in forward gears as well. Run the fault codes to check for TCM and servo/solenoid faults.

What would cause me to have no forward gears


Check the operation of the TCM as it may not be sensing the selector position correctly. Check the selector position on the box as it may have slipped and not selecting the forward gears because it is out of adjustment.

V70 poured new Dex3 auto trans in. Reverse gear stops working after a few days equal 500km, but all forward are still ok.


Sounds like your transmission is going bad. If your transmission is slipping only in drive or forward gears, then it could be just that it is low on fluid, but when reverse starts to slip it usually means rebuild/replace transmission.

96 ROVER DISC. Has strong reverse - won't engage any forward gears. Fluid seems full even when warm.


Make sure the 4wd shifter is in correct position and hasn't slipped out of correct spot to get you moving forward.

IT STARTED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, SHIFT INTO REVERSE, TRUCK WILL NOT MOVE IN REVERSE. IT HAS ALL FORWARDS GEARS, I PUT IN 4X4 AND IT STILL WILL NOT MOVE IN REVERSE. HELP


This is caused by the gear oil,there is none in the gear box, so get a transmission fluid and fill the gear box with it, run the engine idle for some minutes and then try select the gear.

Put car in reverse after car warms and it doesnt ingage until you push on the gas. It stays in the nuetral position


hi sound like the clutch is worn and your having to use the speed of the engine to help you ingage the gear.Does the clutch slip at all when driving in a forward gear ?

I think you are saying the vehicle pulls forward,no matter what gear you put the shifter in?If this is the case,there is a problem with the forward clutch.I've seen this one over and over in many different transmissions and vehicles.The forward clutch pack is always applied whenever the vehicle is moving forward.It is never applied in reverse,or neutral.So,the forward clutch pack loses clearance from normal wear and tear,or a seal in the pack goes bad,and the clutches start slipping....and slipping........still slipping.....until they get SO hot,the clutch plates and steel plates fuse together,are welded together.This is why your Millenia is going forward in reverse and neutral.It's either that or you have a problem with the shifter cable,or linkage,and you didn't mention anything about the detents,or not being able to obtain Park,so i assume all that is ok
