Question about 1994 GMC Jimmy

4 Answers

I have a 94 GMC Jimmy 4.3 Vortec and when I crank it it runs for about 5 seconds then turns shuts off. I've changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump , spark plugs and coil. The problem was that it would'nt turn over as if it was out of gas at first. Once I changed the fuel pump it would turn over but would not start. Did the plugs and it started but died after about 5 seconds. But when I changed the plugs I noticed one was soaked with gas so I cranked it with the plugs out and all the injectors were spraying except for one. I'm thinking it's the regulator because it should at least run with 5 injectors. Solutions?

Thanks for your response! I left out that I tried cranking it with the spark plugs out and all the injectors was spraying except the one that was soaked with gas. This one was pouring out. My oil looks fine. Also, all of the old plugs had black carbon build-up on them.

I don't have a chip and also I failed to mention that the injector where the spark plug was wet, the gas was pouring out. Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I leftout that one injector that wasn't spraying, the gas was just running out. This is also the one where the plug was wet. I'm getting plenty of spark from the plugs though. Also, there was alot of black carbon build up on the plugs.

U have not done the most basic test here, just replaced parts, u need to do a electronic engine control system fault code test, go to the link below and do the test and then post the results back on this thread. also perform a fuel pressure test, u will need to buy a fuel pressure test gauge, they hook up to the fuel rail test port on the tube that supplies the fuel injectors.

I would suspect the ignition module as being the problem since you already did the pump and have verified your geting fuel.

Are the plugs wet. ?? which would indicate an ignition module issue.

Are you getting spark all all. And is the spark gone after it stalls.

If you have no RPM signal when it dies you also could have a bad crank sensor but if this was the case your plugs would be dry and the car would not start and die. This condition points more to a ignition modukle issue.

Als wiggle the distributor shaft. The bearing on these tend to fail allowing alot of slop.

Do you have a chip on the key? if so you may have a security problem. very common for this error of gm to have problems with it's vats system. also the regulator would not cause only one injector not to spray. that inject is most likely clogged.

let me know if you have that chip and then we can go from there.

Check to see if there is fuel in the oil, this I believe has the spider type fuel system under the intake,if it has a broken fuel line,it will have fuel in the oil.The regulator if shut down, will cause this also.

There is a lot of things ,could be wrong, not including, you need one injector, but before replacing the one,you may need the whole spider replacement, pressure regulator is in tis,and maybe part of the problem,be sure to change the oil,to remove any fuel that might be in the oil.

The injector that is not spraying, but is pouring,is bad, replace it,and get the oil changed, and the vehicle should run correct.

My 1998 gmc snonma votec wont start it cranks and cranks and after about 20 mins it starts after that i can shout it off and it will fire back up fine then a day will go by and it dose the same thing

You have to check the fuel pump pressure to make sure it is supplying sufficient fuel pressure..Try turning the switch to on but do not start..now listen for the fuel pump to prime the system..it should run for 4-5 seconds the shut off..now try and start..if it is fully primed it should start...note although you are getting some gas dosent mean the pump is ok...sometimes it starts to go bad and then all at once it will let you down for good...have it checked out..good luck

I recently had similar symptoms from my Kia Rio, hard to start, bad idle in gear, etc.
Ended up being the idle air control valve, you can try cleaning yours with carb cleaner and see if there's any difference.
A clogged fuel filter can produce the same symptoms too, that might be the easiest thing to start with, then it's just a process of elimination from there.

There is not a part called a fuel sensor on this vehicle. If you have good electrical to ingition and no OBD codes witch it is most likely an OBD 11 system the first year for your vehicle. So is the MIL light on service engine light on if no then replace the fuel filter first its under the drivers door mounted to the frame rail also check if the fuel pump is putting out enough fuel and pressure when you have the filter off by turning the key to run and putting a plastic bottle on the line comeing from the fuel pump you should get about an ounce per second from the pump do a 5 second test you should get about 5 ounces of fuel. If you say get one ounce then the pump is no good if its OK then it is likely the fuel filter and this will solve the problem. The reason i'm telling you this is the fuel pumps on these vehicles had problems and unless you or someone else has replaced the pump it is the most likely cause of this problem good luck A nd there some fuel sensors on the fuel pump it self for pressure and gauge control and EVAP emissions control systems that wouldn't stop fuel flow to the throttle body they would just set codes off

Replace the fuel filter first. When you turn the key on, the fuel pump should run for a few moments, then turn off. If it keeps running, then replace the pump as well. Suggest having the fuel system pressure checked at the engine itself. Hope this helps!

Hello chat1999: My name is Roger and I will help. If you have 5 injectors spraying fuel and one that is spaying a steam. You need to replace the one that is not spraying. The engine needs a preset fuel pressure in order to start. The one that is spraying a stream is open and the fuel pressure will never come up to what is required to start and run the engine. I would also look at the oil. If the injector is dumping fuel a lot of unburnt fuel will end up in the oil pan. Also the converter will feel the brunt of the bad injector. This will cause emission problems until all the fuel is burnt out of the system. You think the regulator is the problem. This is simple to check. Unplug the regulator and turn the key on. If fuel is observed coming from the regulator it is defective and should be replaced. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. This way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Hard start when cold/first start in morning

The pressure relief valve is in the spider fuel injector not the fuel pump. We have had our 94 gmc jimmy for 4 years & have had to replace the fuel injector 4 times which cost right at $500 each time for the part. Yes the spider fuel injector cost averages around $500.
