Question about 1999 Dodge Caravan

My gauges dont work and check engine light comes on sometimes if i hit the dash they will work diagnostic code p1698 came up

This is a communication ccd error code from pcm to transmission.

i have found a fix that will be easy and cheap if you have soldering skills and a soldering iron. this will also fix your gauges from not responding or not working.

Remove your instrument cluster and check the solder joints on the back of the cluster main board. You may have to flex the board to see the cracks in the solder. i have found the main connector soldering joints to be cracked. more common is the bottom row all the way to the right pin. you will need to remove the board off the plastic cluster housing and flip it over.

look for the two rows of pins that are for the red plugs main connector. check them very well and re solder any in question.

this is the fix and i guarantee it. i see this all the time in my shop and sounds harder than it is. it is a simple fix and will save you tons of money trying to find the issue with mechanics that don't know. let me know if you have any questions and good luck.

P1698 0n a 1999 jeep grand cherokee,, reset so the engine light is ,, dont pop back on agin untill u shut it if and start it agin, then it comes back on..p1698

Alot of times, this concern has to do with the solder joints on the Cluster. If you take it out and resolder those joints or have them resoldered by someone else, it might just fix your problem. Especially, if this code is accompanied by intermittent gauges and cluster operation.

P1698, No bus message from trans control module, its three things a open circuit,wiring intermittent or the pins of the PCM. Do you see the location of the battery near that is the PCM,the PCM get hit by rain getting dirt,ect.. So pull the harness and visually inspect for corrosion and broken pins

There has been issues with the solder joints on the PIN connection to the gauge cluster. The issue being that over time thru vibration and such one of these solder joints will fail (happened on or 1999) you can repair this though. You will have to remove all of the trim from around the driver's side dash board, this will include the trim towards the center of the dash. Once these pieces are remove you'll need to remove the gauge panel (I believe (4) allen head screws) carefully bring the panel and release the wire clip from it. Looking at the back of the panel, where the plug was, carefully with plenty of light look for one of the pins (or more) to have a failed solder joint. It will be very faint however the failed joint will be a fine dark line around the pin. To correct use a small soldering iron and reheat this solder until it wants to flow, let it cool and reassemble. Take your time and this is an easy fix!

Stratus confusion

This is a real common problem on caravan. But I haven't seen it on stratus. But it might be the same thing. When it won't start the gauge won't work at the same time? When it does this does slapping the side of the dash make the gauges work and then the car starts? Try this

The P1698 code means that no digital data is being received by the powertrain controller from the transmission control module, located on the right inner fender. The manual says to check the CCD bus wires between the module and the rest of the system using the Chrysler diagnostic readout box. But if you don't have one then I think you can do the same thing by measuring for continuity (near 0 resistance) between pin 4 of its plug and pin 11 of the data link plug under the dash or pin 59 of the powertrain controller plug.
Then check the resistance between pin 43 if its plug and pin 3 of the data link connector or pin 60 of the powertrain controller plug. The powertrain controller is on the opposite side of the engine compartment on the left inner fender. These module plugs are held in place by a bolt. If the continuity between the transmission and the powertrain CCD wires checks to be ok, then according to the manual the trans controller should be replaced.
That is my analysis of what you report. You may have been told to replace the body control module erroneously because the code for that is P1695. If the independent garage was using the check engine light as its diagnostic methodology those problems both give a code 66, so they may guessed that it was the body module as being the faulty one. Problems with starting and with gauges are often related to this data bus communication system so all your issues seem to point this way. You might also, when checking the wires, also verify that they are not shorted to ground.

you need to go over your entire wiring harness, under the hood and inside the dash. Start with the ground wire on the battery and work your way inside. It sounds like there is a loose ground wire somewhere

try to replace the ignition switch mine went bad and either things didnt come on or all the dash lights would stay on
