I am considering replacing the starter on my 1998

I was told that you can get a bad starter to work temporarily if you tap it. Problem is, I do not know where the starter is located. I am considering replacing the starter. Where is the starter located? Can a novice DIY repariman do this?

If it is a V6 it's a pita,on a 4cycl. you might stand a chance, take it in and have someone put it in for you,be on the safe side if you can't have the car down for awhile, being a novice and all

No. i just did one and iam a tech and it took about 3 hrs. the engine has to be jacked up, its on the driverside, from underniegth the motor above the front diff, its so tight to get to, i dont think you can even get to it to tap on it, i would bite the bullet and have a shop do this one, good luck.

My 98 odlsmobile silhouette wont crank but lights come on my dad say it the fuel pump were is it located?

You say it won't crank...(turn over...?) The motor will still turn over even if the fuel pump is bad...(located in the top of the gas tank...professional repair only:) It could be dirty battery terminals (corrodid) the lights can work, but not enough juice to engage the starter...if it won't crank and cannot be jump started with another battery the starter is probably can try tapping on the starter with a hammer...(sometimes will temporarily work and confirm starter is bad. Hope this helps:)

Had to replace a blown engine on a 2005 ford escape xls

Check battery cables for corrosion and good connection.
Try to boost it with jump starter.
Try to tap on starter while attempt to start.
To me sounds like a bad starter.

Lights work horn works engine doesnt start no sound when turning key

have some one turn the key to start position while you tap the starter with a hammer from underneath, it seems like the starter is bad.this will possibly get it started and if it does your starter is going and must be replaced.

Im having a problem with my car starting, i just replaced the battery but it wont start...what do i do?...

Is it turning over at all or is it acting like its dead? If dead probably the starter. If you can get to the starter try tapping on the solenoid on top of the starter. It's the smaller cylinder looking thing on top of the starter where all the wires connect to. After you tap, if it does start remember you didn't fix it you temporarily unbroke it. You still need to replace the starter. You might have to tap pretty hard. Let me know how this goes. We can go from there.

Will not start battery is good

have starter checked, may be bad, also you can try tapping on starter while someone holds the key in the crank position, tap with a hammer lightly sometime that gets starter going, to test use a test light while key is held in crank see if you get power to small wire on starter, if you get power replace strater. hope this helps.

Car wont turn over

Sounds like you have a bad starter. To check this you can try taking a hammer to the starter and tap it while someone in the car turns the key. If it starts you know you have a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this helps you out
