Sounds like thermostat is stuck open need to be replaced

Check the gauge cluster- I am having the same problem with ours-- check the actual temperature-verify thermal/laser thermostat or use a liquid thermometer-- mine is not running hot, water pump, circuit boards, temp sending unit, or fan clutch or thermostat

the dommed part of the T-stat goes up, it won't go in backwards as memory serves me, what u almost certainly have going on here is the Air temperature control electric bend door actuator s defective, and the door is stuck in the cold air position in the heating/ac duct, to replace this the dash must be removed from the car..

does it do this first thing when its cold out ?? if so, fill the coolant res to the max line when cold, if light still comes on, it could be either the coolant leven sensor (my guess) or the temp sensor for the engine- these are known to go bad every few years

Unless you have symptoms of over-heating, I rather doubt that your water pump is a problem. I recall that my water pump had a metal impeller (1992 C900); I haven't heard of a plastic impeller on a Saab pump before. (Most pump failures are the bearing seal, and the pump leaks coolant) If your temp gauge is slightly low (and was OK before) I'd rule out water pump issues.

You might have one or more of the following issues:

  1. did you use a Saab thermostat? The Saab stat has three stages (no flow to rad - cold; flow to rad and heater core - normal operation; and no flow to heater core, full flow to rad - overheating) that most after market stats don't.
  2. did you use a low temp stat? this opens at about 82 deg (rather than 89 deg), and will run cooler during the winter, hence you gauge will show lower than the mid point. The big benefit is that your engine won't overheat during the summer (a very good thing!) with the low temp stat.
  3. has your rad and heater core been flushed recently? If the heater core is obstructed flow will be reduced and the heater will run cool. Feel the rad and heater hoses when your engine is warm; if heater hose is much cooler than rad hose with heater temp set to max, then core flow is likely restricted, or valve is not moving much from the shut position.
  4. is you vacuum tank properly connected and are there no leaks in the vacuum piping? The tank is in the driver side rear wheel well below the trunk deck on a convertible, and in the passenger side front fender area on the other cars. It's a white bottle with one or two hoses connected to it. If not properly on, your vacuum operated heater flaps won't move. Does the air distribution knob make sucking or hissing noises when you set it to different positions? If not, check the tank connections, look for vacuum line leaks, then suspect the vacuum valve behind the distribution knob.
  5. Lastly, the shaft connecting the temp control knob to the valve behind it may not be properly in place. This can be inspected, and adjusted if necessary, from the speaker/vent cutout on top of the dash. Make sure you re-connect the black flex hose to the air vent tube, or you'll get no defrosting afterwards!
  6. remember, the centre vents always blow cold air; a brilliant idea from Saab so the driver (and passenger) can get fresh air in the face and stay awake while the rest of the driver, passenger and car is toasty!

I would change the coolant temp sensor first as it's cheap and it fails.
It's the sensor beside the thermostat,and it's the temp sensor for the computer,not the temp senor for the gauge on the dash.Also sometimes the idle air control can get slow to move on a cold start and just cracking the throttle just a little with the gas pedal helps start a cold engine with a slow idle air control.

Thank you for the opportunity. I have a Ford Escape 2001 6 cl and temperature gauge stocks on cold. Today it moves to hot then went to neutral and slowly went to cold again without moving.

Temp sensor/sender units, ussually send a variable earth resistance dependent on temperature, so it sounds like the wiring is broken/rubbed through, causing the sporadic changes due to full earth going to gauge(hot). brocken wire(cold)

But could be a faulty sender just the same, doesnt sound like a thermostat after driving the gauge would still move in relation to engine temp, would start by checking the wiring to temp sensor, also check coolant level and monitor engine temp while driving if gauge is in-op.

have you checked the coolant level in the system. if its low it will do this.also you may have a bad thermostat that needs replacing as it could be stuck open not allowing the coolant to get to operating temp. these can cause the symptons your having.

Sounds normal. If the gauge moved further over, it would indicate an overheating problem, wouldn't it? Check that engine is at normal operating temperature after it warms up. If it is running too cold, your thermostat might be stuck open.

99 continental temp gauge not rising


Usually a sign of a faulty thermostat or temp gauge sending unit.
If the engine really is not reaching normal temp you would be burning more fuel.
Assuming the radiator is full of coolant, you could test the sending unit for the gauge, but my money is on a new thermostat.

it could be the cold air blend door or the thermostat is the engine temp up to the middle of the gauge or close to it if so then thermostat is ok if not then go ahead and replace it.

Temperature Gauge Always On Cold


As long as your gauge is still moving up, there's no real problem. You have heat coming from the heater. It's only a problem if it's getting too hot. What's going on is that you don't let the vehicle run long enough, and it's so cold outside that the engine stays cold. It raises in temp when your stopped because there's no airflow through the radiator. The thermostat just heats up the engine block, and won't change the reading on the gauge. When this goes bad your car will overheat in just a few miles.
