Question about 1997 Nissan Quest

1 Answer

My 1997 Nissan Quest acted up yesterday. I stopped at a stop sign and when I accelerated could only go 8 MPH! I floored the accelerator it chugged but would go no faster. I drove home 2 miles very slow with flashers on. That evening my husband started up the car and it drives fine again. What do you think ? Is the transmission about to go?

You have to re-set the obd via using Nissan's approved drive-cycle which is;

1. Start the engine when the engine coolant

temperature gauge needle points to C. Allow

the engine to idle until the gauge needle

points between the C and H (normal operating

temperature).

2. Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88

km/h), then quickly release the accelerator

pedal completely and keep it released for at

least 6 seconds.

3. Quickly depress the accelerator pedal for a

moment, then drive the vehicle at a speed

of 53 to 60 MPH (86 to 96 km/h) for at least

5 minutes.

4. Stop the vehicle.

5. Accelerate the vehicle to 35 MPH (55 km/h)

and maintain the speed for 20 seconds.

6. Repeat steps 4 through 5 at least 3 times.

7. Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88 km/h)

and maintain the speed for at least 3 minutes.

8. Stop the vehicle and turn the engine off.

9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 at least one more

time.

If step 1 through 7 is interrupted, repeat the

preceding step. Any safe driving mode is acceptable

between steps. Do not stop the engine

until step 7 is completed. If you cannot or

do not want to perform the driving pattern, a

They did the right things. Those are the first attempts to address the issue. However the issue is not resolved, please have them to check the ECU. When this is faulty, it gives the misfires or poor acceleration due to the wrong gas/ air mixture controlled by ECU. This is an expensive replacement . Make sure they can diagnose correctly.

You will need to run a fuel pressure test on it to see if your fuel pressure is correct. How many miles are on the car and when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced.

There are several things you can do including:

Ensure proper tire pressure
Remove all unnecessary things from your car to reduce weight
Tuneup: spark plugs, wire, rotor cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter
In Summer: open windows at low speed, use A/C at high speed (if you are hot, that is)
Ensure you have proper wheel alignment
At a stop, gradually accelerate to speed, do not floor the pedal
Coast to a stop, meaning you let off the gas way early and use your brake less in the process
Do not go over 55 MPH

Doing all of the above mentioned, I have increased my mileage by almost 25%.
