You need a new crankshaft position sensor, a very common problem.

First thing is to see if the battery needs charging. If it has a full or near full charge, then maybe a loose or corroded battery cable connection is making the car seem dead..
You have to get the engine cranking at a normal rate or speed, to first see if it will start. If you get it cranking and it won't start, see if your fuel pump has failed. Best way to check that is to have the fuel pressure tested. No fuel pressure from a failed fuel pump is a major cause of a 'no start' condition.

Engine cuts out when driving acts like it wants to die

it will if you do not follow the simple steps first
have the fault codes read instead of guessing
next what you describes indicate 2 major fault areas
1--- faulty crank / cam position sensors and wires
2----is problem injectors and fuel pressure from problem pressure regulator
having the fault codes read will determine the area of concern

Fuel caps have breather holes in them - once clogged the fuel tank is sucked vacuum and the engine stalls. Check the fuel tank cap for clogged breather holes.

read your code

,my advice to you is to purchase a Chilton or equivalent service manual for your vehicle,
all the necessary information to service
most any problem can be found within the pages, these manuals can be obtained
from almost any parts suppler at a reasonable cost there will be a section on how to retrieve codes and list of faults and basic repair suggestions

Sputters and dies

Do you have the shop manual? You need verify the workings of each part and system one at a time. Follow the working line. You stated you checked the fuel pressure. Where was it checked? At which location? Was it checked under throttle? Does the fuel regulator check out? Is the fuel good (any water)? These problems can sometimes be a bear to find. It takes time and patience. Do one thing at a time and verify that it works properly before moving on to the next part/attack plan. Check all ground conections from the block/engine to the frame/body. Once you verify that the fuel delivery is good, start looking at emission related parts and fuel management parts (TPS, MAF, Cold start injector, EGR, etc.)
