The printed circuit burned up on the back of the instrument cluster & the speedometer is now inoperative. I suspect the speed sensor attached to the side of the transmission tail shaft housing. Your thoughts?

Find another gauge cluster from the junkyard. You can repair the one you have. Shouldn't cost more than 30-40 dollars.

Sorry but it's not a fuse problem . There is not a fuse just for the speedometer . The microprocessor inside the instrument cluster determines where the speedometer needle points , just like the fuel gauge , tachometer etc... Having the vehicle checked for DTC'S would be the proper step to take .
Vehicle Speed Signal
The vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS) module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems which require a vehicle speed signal input.
Speedometer
The electronic speedometer receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module.

2003 Grand Marquis digital speedo only reads "0". All other displays read correctly. Could it be the speed control? If so, where exactly is it located?


The speedometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear in the transmission.

Speedometer
The speedometer is an analog gauge that is located in the instrument cluster. The PCM/VCM receives an analog input from the vehicle speed sensor and converts it to a digital signal containing 4,000 pulses per mile (PPM) for the instrument cluster.
The PCM/VCM sends this digital output (4,000 PPM) to the instrument cluster on a designated circuit. These pulses can be measured in Hertz (Hz) using a digital multimeter (DMM) on the AC scale. The PCM/VCM calibration is matched to the final drive and tire size of each vehicle. If the final drive or tire size is changed for any reason, the PCM/VCM must be updated in order to match the new final drive or tire size. If not, the signal will not be accurate for proper speedometer/odometer operation. An incorrect signal can affect the antilock brakes and the cruise control systems.
The speedometer system consists of the instrument cluster, vehicle speed sensor (VSS), PCM/VCM and related wiring. The VSS is a permanent magnet signal generator that sends an analog signal proportional to the propeller shaft speed to the PCM/VCM. Install a scan tool.
Raise the vehicles drive wheels. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Start the engine.
Place the transmission into drive for automatic transmission and third gear for manual transmission.
Compare the displayed vehicle speed on the Instrument Cluster with the monitored speed on the scan tool.
Does the vehicles speedometer and the scan tool both display 0 km/h (0 mph)? You really need a Factory scan tool or equivalent to check this . The VSS is an input to the PCM/VCM . engine computer . You can test with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter , for signal to engine computer .
I know most people don't like hearing this , but I suggest you take it to a ASE certified repair facility .

if the odometer is working then the problem is with the speedometer head unit as the odometer gets its information from the same source as the speedometer. you can have the speedometer head checked and fixed if its fixable.

Well Cliff your really going to have to take this to a professional shop or Ford dealer ! You don't want to just replace parts on this , could get very expensive ! I don't know how familiar you are with newer vehicles , given the all the electronic modules on vehicles today. There is a serial data communication network called CAN .controller area network that the modules share info on. Your instrument cluster is a module of a kind too , has microprocessor it side ! You really need a dealership type scan tool to check this one out. You could possibly need a new instrument cluster or a PCM ! Then there would need to be programmed ! this is nothing for a do it yourselfer to do !

There isn't a fuse just for the speedometer , there are four fuse for the whole instrument cluster . If one of these fuse's were burnt you would have more then just the speedometer not working ! You need to have a scan tool to find out what is up ! you could need a new cluster ! Is the check engine light on ? if not wouldn't think vehicle speed sensor bad , besides speed info for speedometer PCM uses for transmission shift points ! Good luck ,hope this helps !

Hi, it's possible the bulb is burned out or not making good contact with the circuit board. It should come on during the bulb check when you first turn the key on. Pull out the cluster and check the bulb. If it's good, see if you can clean the contact surfaces to get it working again. Or, move to another state where they don't worry about stupid things like a light bulb.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the two steering column shroud-to-panel retaining screws and remove the shroud.
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel trim.
  4. Remove the cluster trim cover from the instrument panel by removing the eight screws.
  5. Remove the four instrument cluster to panel retaining screws.
  6. Position the cluster slightly away from the panel for access to the back of the cluster to disconnect the speedometer.

If there is not sufficient access to disengage the speedometer cable from the speedometer, it may be necessary to remove the speedometer cable at the transmission and pull cable through cowl, to allow room to reach the speedometer quick disconnect.
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly and remove the cluster assembly from the instrument panel.

To install:
  1. Apply approximately 1 / 8 in. diameter ball of D7AZ-19A331-A Silicone Dielectric compound or equivalent in the drive hole of the speedometer head.
  2. Position the cluster near its opening in the instrument panel.
  3. Connect the wiring harness connector to the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly.
  4. Position the cluster to the instrument panel and install the four cluster to panel retaining screws.
  5. Install the panel trim covers and the steering column shroud.
  6. Connect the battery ground cable.
  7. Check operation of all gauges, lamps and signals.

My Tachometer works ,but my speedometer doesnt ? In mornings when cold it hesitates and misses, once it warms up it does great. Why ?


The hesitates and misses is probably a chock problem, especially since when it warms up, it does great.

Since you weren't very specific on your indications, I thought a general troubleshooting guide might be helpful to you. But you might want to look on ebay for a shop maintenance manual for your vehicle if you plan on keeping it for awhile and doing your own maintenance.

This answer is applicable for many BMWs in addition to the one listed below.

The tach and speedo work most of the time, but sometimes work sporadically.

Here is a write-up on the initial steps in tracking down a speedometer and/or tachometer problem.
Applies to: E23, E24, E28, E30, E32, E34 with speed sensor units mounted in the differential housing cover.

1) Speedometer - The speed sensor may be faulty. The sensor is mounted in the differential cover. Remove the harness plug and remove the sensor. Clean the sensor and measure the resistance (should be 0.0 Ohms). If there is any resistance higher than 0.0 (zero Ohms), replace the sensor. If the resistance reads correct, reinstall the sensor.

2) The wiring at the connector plug for the speed sensor (in the differential housing) may be faulty and corroded .... pull the boot back from the plug housing and inspect the wires and the pins.

3) The actual speedometer and/or tachometer head may be faulty. It may have a loose connection within it or a cracked circuit board.

4) The speedometer or tachometer head may be loose on the main instrument circuit board (do the gauges change or move if you smack the top of the dash, above the gauges?). Remove the instrument cluster and check the mounting of the speedometer/tachometer to the circuit board. 5) The plug that carries the impulse signal into the instrument cluster may have loose contacts. The plug for the speedometer signal is located on the driver's side of the back of the instrument cluster (on the E30 chassis). If you remove the lower dash trim panel (the one above the driver's knees), you can reach up and touch the plug. It is in a vertical position and has up to 26 wires in it. If you wiggle the plug, while driving, and the speedo comes & goes, you have loose contacts in the plug connection.

6) You may have a problem with the service interval PC board and it's NiCad batteries. If your oil change and service interval lights can not be reset (or will not stay reset for an appropriate time period), the PC board is likely faulty. This can affect the various gauges, including the speedometer and tachometer. If the PC board is faulty, I would suggest replacing it (after checking the other areas noted above). See the attached Fast Times newsletter article on replacing the service interval PC board.

In your specific case, I would suspect that you need to replace the service interval PC-board, if your service reminder lights can not be reset or do not stay reset.

Speedometer stopped working.


The speed sensors will not fix it. This is something that these cars will do in hot weather. The instrument cluster need to be removed and the contacts from the printed circuit to the connector need to be cleaned. Over time they will lose contact and affect the fuel gauge or speedometer. You may have to replace the speedo cluster. Sometimes if you hit the dash just above the fuel gauge it will start working too. Been there done that, fixed mine as the printed circuit was coming apart at the harness connector.
