Question about 1991 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency

Keyis dead . wont start in park/neutral yet with key in run position starter can be shorted acrossed and engine will star and run for 2/3 sec. then dies repeatedly. fuel pressure at fuel rail is good . fuses all arew good battery is new and fully charged. is there a way to test the magnetyic chip in key itself and could that be thew culprit? or what else have i not checked? can relays be tested?

The piece you are referring to is a resistor of a specific value, witch compares to a value hardwired in the engine management computer, yes this can be the culprit, make certain the contacts are clean, use some fine steel wool to clean or an ink eraser is good to, there can also be a fault in the contacts in the key hole, especially is someone tried to steel you wheels inserting incorrect keys can also danage the contacts, do you have a shop manual for your ride ? let me know

Could be a number of thing's , can you do automotive electrical testing ? Do you know if starting is PCM / ECM controlled or BCM controlled ? Do you know what these are ? BCM - body control module , PCM/ECM - engine computer !
Moving the ignition switch to the START position sends a 12-volt signal to the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) Crank Request circuit. The ECM/PCM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. With the transmission in Park, voltage flows through the Park/Neutral position switch and feeds the starter relay coil. The PCM then grounds the control circuit of the starter relay. When the starter relay is energized it allows battery positive voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal. On some vehicles the starter will continue to crank the engine with the key released until it starts or the crank command has timed out to prevent excessive heat build up in the starter circuitry or the ECM/PCM receives an engine run flag.
Circuit Description (BCM Controlled)
Moving the ignition to the START position signals the body control module (BCM) that engine crank has been requested. The BCM verifies that theft is not active and sends a serial data message to the powertrain control module (PCM) requesting engine start. The BCM also energizes the RUN/CRANK RELAY. When the RUN/CRANK RELAY switch side closes, and the vehicle is in Park or Neutral or with the clutch is fully depressed, if equipped, supplies voltage to the starter relay coil. Do you know what a park neutral safety switch is ? What do you mean key stuck in ignition ? Can't turn the key to off position , or you can an the key will not come out ?
Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop .

Starter wont crank ,engine wont start even when i cross starter and starter turns engine over, shifter wont come out of park what do i need to check


I can't help much w/o year--make--model? Do you have a security system on this vehicle?
Most starters have two voltage circuits, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position, may be wired through neutral switch, depending on the tranny, maybe you have a starter relay? The starter motor usually grounds through the engine block. The fact you can jump the starter motor and it cranks, sounds like the ground is ok. Use a test light, check for voltage on those two voltage terminals. Make sure tranny is out of gear and parking brake is set.
Some makes and models have shift-interlock, you can't shift it unless you step on the brake. Do the brake lites work? If not fix that first.
Some makes and models have a shift-interlock bypass button so you can press the button, then shift into neutral. Parking brake set.

O5 Colorado got the ecm code when I shut off the truck and now it won't turn over


What ECM code ? What is everything else that is working ? Headlamps , inside lighting , radio etc... When you turn the key on do the instrument cluster warning lights come on then off a few seconds later ? Anti-theft (security light ) On ? Flashing ? Do you know what all is involved ,or happens when you turn the key to start ?

Verify that no starter relay, immobilizer, or automatic transmission DTCs are set that would cause the PCM to disable starting.
? If the specified DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool PCM Ignition 1 Signal parameter with a scan tool. The reading should be greater than 10.0 Volts.
? If less than the specified value, test the ETC, PCM 1, and PCM B fuses, the RUN/CRNK relay, and the PCM ignition voltage circuits for an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the PCM.
Ignition OFF, remove the START relay.
Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground.
? If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the START fuse and the B+ circuit for an open/high resistance.
Ignition ON, transmission in Park or clutch pedal pressed, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the PNP/clutch start switch signal circuit terminal 86 and ground.
? If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the IGN fuse, RUN/CRANK relay, PNP/clutch switch ignition voltage circuit, and the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the PNP switch or the clutch start switch.
Connect a test lamp between the park/neutral signal circuit terminal 86 and the relay coil control circuit terminal 85.
Ignition ON, transmission in Park, or clutch pedal pressed, turn the ignition switch between the START and RUN positions. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
? If the test lamp is always ON, test the relay control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PCM.
? If the test lamp is always OFF, test the relay control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. Test the PNP/clutch start switch signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the PCM.
Install the START relay.
Connect a test lamp between the starter solenoid terminal and ground.

My 1997 park avenue is stalling. When it does the gages tweek out. The break instantly locks up. And now it wont start nor even turn over. Idk. But I need a lead


There are very specific diagnostic steps to follow when diagnosing problems on vehicles like yours ! An using a professional grade scan tool is key , because it will communicate with all modules on the vehicle ! A shorted module or a serial data bus malfunction will cause a no start , no crank problem !
The PCM has the ability to disable starter operation if conditions inappropriate for starter operation exist. The PCM disables the starter if the engine is running, if a correct VTD password is not received from the PASS-Key?® III module or if the vehicle operator attempts to engage the starter for an extended period of time.
The PCM controlled starter system consists of the following components:

Starter enable relay #1.


?€¢
Starter enable relay #2.


?€¢
The park neutral position switch.


?€¢
The ignition switch.


?€¢
The starter solenoid.


?€¢
The PCM.


Is there a SECURITY light lit on the dash ? Your best bet is take to a ASE certified repair facility !

2004 Envoy XUV doesn't always crank.


I want to see if i catch your drift ! When you turn the key in the ignition switch to start , nothing happens ? Have you tried moving the gear slector to the neutral position to see if it starts then ? Park neutral safety switch problem , maybe .

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont start sometimes, but if I put it in neutral then try to start it..It starts .. What is the problem with my baby.......


Test/Service/Replace

The circuit on newer cars with automatic transmissions has a neutral safety, or neutral start switch installed between the ignition switch and the starter. The ignition switch cannot operate the starter motor unless the transmission is in park or neutral.
Late model vehicles with manual transmissions have a starter/clutch interlock switch that requires the clutch to be depressed to the floor.
Neutral Safety Switch
Normal operations of a neutral safety switch provides a quick check for the adjustment of the gear selector linkage.
  • To do this, move the selector slowly until it clicks into the PARK position.
  • Turn the ignition key to the START position.
  • If the starter operates, the PARK position is correct.
  • After checking the PARK position, move the lever slowly toward the NEUTRAL position until the lever drops at the end of the NEUTRAL stop in the selector gate.
  • If the starter also operates at this point, the gearshift linkage is properly adjusted.
  • This quick test also tests the adjustment of the neutral safety switch.
  • If the engine does not start in either or both of these positions, the neutral safety switch or the gear selector linkage needs adjustment or repair.

CAUTION
Since you must work under the vehicle to adjust most shift linkages make sure you properly raise and support the vehicle before working under it. Also, wear safety glasses or goggles while working under the vehicle.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted or replaced.

97 Maxda Protege starter engages automaticly in park or neutral with key in ON position


You've pretty much answered your own question, although I doubt it's demons...LOL. Ign switch, nuetral safety or park switch, shorted starter, could be chaffed wiring. If your in the ON position and the starter engages, I'd be looking at the ign wire from the switch to the starter solenoid and or relay. Your car is 20 years old so anything is possible at this point. Your best bet is to go to ALLDATA>COM and buy the wiring schematics for your car grab a DVM and start checking your circuits.

Car won't start not the battery


Test the neutral safety switch but doing the following steps.

1)foot on brake
2)turn key to on position
3)shift lever to neutral (N)
4)start the engine
5)shift the lever to Park (P)

If the engine can start at N and not at park then it's the neutral safety switch.
