on the 1987 5.0 F.I. the only idea the system has where TDC is, Is where you tell it. Unlike some vehicles where you reset the timing and everytime you start it it defaults to a factory setting.
There is supposed to be a setting listed on the factory sticker some where under the hood. BUT These seem to disappear after a few years. So we all come to these sites looking for that "Magic Number". Best I can determine so far is to set your timing to 10 degrees BTC, with the spout connector removed. Then remember to put the spout connector back ! Check timing again it should show 'some advance' with the connector back in place. If system is operating properly. I wish I had the factory sticker to be certain of 10 degrees. Chilton's says set to 0 degrees BTC, BUT Hanes says 10 BTC (but consult sticker), Neither one will tell you anything very useful, what a waste at $30 bucks each ! Not to mention many hours studying books that refer you to the dealer for everything you hoped would be in the book !

How to set timing on a 1987 chevy c10

The decal under the hood is the best place to look for the specific instructions, but depending on which engine you have you will need to disconnect a wire terminal, and then set the timing as usual with a timing light. The decal usually gives the connector location and wire color. If not what engine do you have?
