Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus LX which is currently in Mexico. A while ago, we heard a noise like a screeching serpentine belt ... it has been replaced and eliminated as the cause of the noise. I took it to a Ford dealer in Mexico and they say I need to replace two pulleys re: serpentine belt and an injector (the noise according to them is an injector and they need 10 hours to do the work ...on camshaft). Meanwhile, I bought some injector cleaner for $4.50 and the noise has diminished considerably. I am thinking it may go away entirely. I am thinking that I should add another bottle and see what the results will be. I use injector cleaner regularly but a much better brand then I was able to get this time. What do you think? I am not entirely comfortable with this dealership and want to take the car back to Canada in May ... is that likely to be a problem even with a noisy injector? Meanwhile, I am waiting for a call from them to do the work!! Thanks for your help. Steve Hawrishok

In my analysis the noise is originating from the camshaft sensor drive shaft which is located on top of the water can see the sensor which is a round thing just near the ac need a qualified mech. to do this. The noise is the result of no lubrication going to the shaft.

I have a ford 1991 tempo,4 cylinder. There is a screeching coming from my car. When the screeching happends all the lights dim, and the air/heat blows out low, ones the screeching stop the lights go back...

The noise is most likely the drive belt. On that year and model, you have 3 different drive belts: one for the power steering, one for the alternator, and a serpentine belt for the rest of the accessories. Based upon your symptoms, the alternator belt would be suspect. But in this case, the alternator belt is a secondary belt powered off of the A/C pulley. So the culprit is most likely the serpentine belt. Cheapest solution is to replace the serpentine belt and see if that resolves the problem. If the problem persists, then the automatic belt tensioner for the serpentine belt is the next most likely culprit. This is a royal pain to replace and just the part can set you back in dollars. I've attached an exploded view of the right engine mount -- you will need to remove most of this in order to access the tensioner. Good luck with that!

I have Ford Taurus 2001. There is a screech sound near the belt.

That would be your belt tensioner and or water pump or idler pulley. Only way to found out take the belt off and wiggle each one.

Never use WD40 in a rubber belt.  Replace belt with ford belt and new tensioner.   And don't put anything on the belt..ever!.

Air condition noise

Either the belt tensioner is going bad or the compressor or clutch is going bad. Is the belt tight? Check the deflection in the belt if it is to loose replace the tensioner. Also double check the belt part number and make sure they sold you the correct length belt.
