Transmission cap? To add fluid? If that is what you mean, there is no cap and filler tube. You use an automatic transmission fluid funnel (long and thin) and refill the fluid through the transmission's dipstick tube. Pour the fluid in slowly and check level often to avoid overfilling. Use the correct ATF specified by GM and DO NOT overfill your transmission. I hope this helps.

I have 1989 Pontiac Sunbird 5 speed. I CANNOT find the Transmission Dipstick to check it? Can you tell me if it has a dipstick so I can check it?


4T45 transmission don't have one. To check these it has to be on a lift. You can check them, but you need 4 jacks stands, Lift it and place the stands so the car is level. On the passenger side on the transmission. By the axle, there is a small 11mm plug. You have to start the car, then remove the plug. When it is full transmission fluid will start coming out the hole. To fill it , there is a cap on top the transmission,about the size of a cap on a gallon jug. The cap can be red or black. Sometimes the are marked transmission fill.

Chevrolet recommends that the transmission fluid be changed every 50,000 miles, but Chevy intended the transmission to be serviced only by authorized repair shops. For this reason, the HHR does not feature a transmission fluid dipstick. However, the HHR's transmission fluid can still be checked without exotic tools.

It is important to check the fluid level only after the fluid has circulated throughout the transmission by shifting through the gears. Failing to allow the fluid to circulate will result in a false fluid level reading. Turn the engine on and shift through each of the transmission's gears with the brake pedal depressed and the parking brake applied. The car should be allowed to idle in each gear position for approximately five seconds. Turn the engine off, then climb underneath the passenger's side of the vehicle. A small plug is located on the passenger's side of the transmission. Remove this plug with a wrench. Turn the engine on and observe whether any fluid drips out of the transmission plug's opening. If fluid does begin to drip from the plug opening, the transmission does not require additional fluid. Turn the engine off and install the transmission plug.

If fluid did not begin to drip out of the transmission's plug, transmission fluid must be added. Turn the engine off, then remove the black breather cap from the top of the transmission. The circular breather cap twists into the transmission. Twist the cap in a counterclockwise direction until it detaches from the transmission. Because of the lack of clearance between the breather cap's opening and the bottom of the vehicle, transmission fluid cannot be poured into the breather cap opening. Attach a fluid pump to a quart-sized container of new transmission fluid. Insert the pump's hose into the transmission through the breather cap's opening. Turn the engine on, then actuate the pump until fluid just begins to drip out of the plug's opening on the side of the transmission. Screw the breather cap onto the top of the transmission, then install the plug with a wrench.

How to check transmission fluid


Checking the Transmission Fluid

How to check trans oil level and condition


  • There is a 8mm or 10mm plug on the back of the transmission (underneath the car) When you pull that plug if fluid comes out then it it full. If not you add fluid until it just barely comes out that hole and then the transmission is full.
  • Now you add fluid from the top of the transmission. You have to look way down in the engine bay on top of the transmission for a red or black cap. It may say "do not open" or "open by a technician only." Take and pull that cap off and this is the fill spout for the transmission. It's a fill only, not a check. Add from this spout until it comes out that little plug on the back of the transmission.
  • You will hear people call this a "sealed" transmission of "non-serviceable." Now you can tell them rubbish lol.
  • To check the condition you can look to see if it is getting black or smells burnt. After 50,000 miles the fluid needs flushed and after 100,000 miles you need to change the filter and gasket for the transmission.

Your scanner will give you the code but it will not tell you how to fix your vehicle. Scanners basically tell you what systems to check or what systems are failing.

These are what your codes mean:

P0700: Transmission Control Module
- Shorted or open circuit within transmission control module (TCM)
- Failure of transaxle control module. This is just a informative code.

P0734: Gear ratio error in 4th gear
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit

P0732: Gear ratio error in 2nd gear
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid

How to fix:
- Retight or replaced fuel tank filler cap
- Replaced damage or leaking EVAP canister

Based on the info check your EVAP system. I would check for leaks and maybe replace the EGR and the canister.

For the transmission check the TCM also you may need to take it to a mechanic though.

Where is the cap to add transmission fluid yourself located, symbol noted on legend inside hood, but I am just not seeing the cap for the transmission fluid reservoir,


transmission fluid doesnt have a filler cap like the oil does . it will require the use of a funnel to add the trans fluid by way of the dip stick tube. locate lwft side rear of the motor.

YOU PROBABLY HAVE A MANUAL 5 SPEED. THERE IS NO DIPSTICK. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TAKE IT TO A SHOP

Cant find dip stick for tranny fluid 2004 sunfire


GM went to sealed transmissions. That car doesn't have a transmission dipstick.

There's a fill bolt that needs to be removed from the transmission while the car is on a level surface. If transmission fluid comes out, then you're at the proper level. Otherwise fill until fluid starts to come out. (Similar to what would be done on a manual transmission)

Look at the top of the transmission for a little red cap(like the oil fill cap) this is where you add fluid. If you want to check fluid condition, you need to remove cap and stick something in there and smear the fluid on a piece of paper to see color.

Adding Transmission Fluid


Get a funnel and pour in the transmission fluid where the transmission oil dipstick is. The plastic container with the yellow cap is probably your radiator fluid (engine coolant)
