Engine labouring could be a crankshaft position sensor or amass air-flow sensor. however I like to blame most electrical issues of corrded ECUs.

the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36

you gain acess to it under the hood....
this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
compartment.

the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.

remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.

you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.

this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
sensors....

all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
harness.

I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
one out.

BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.

Your engine probably has an automatic choke device that adjusts automatically with engine temperature. To set the choke when the engine is cold you have to depress the accelerator to the floor and release it completely. You shouldn't have to depress the accelerator again to start the engine, turn the key the engine should start. As the engine begins to warm up it will also begin to initially run faster then it will start to run rough. At this point you have to press the accelerator and release it again. The auto choke mechanism should allow the choke butterfly to open. There may be a number of stops in the system and the choke butterfly will stop again still not fully open and only become fully open when the engine is at operating temperature. full power is only achieved when the engine is fully warm(operating temp).so if you accelerate more than, say, a third of the gas pedal,the car will feel sluggish.
this is more apparent when first starting the car in the morning in winter.almost like the car is going to stall.
most wear in the engine is leaving it to idle when cold you should always drive the car straight away from cold.then when hot turn on the a/c if required....

Engine turns over and all plugs are firing, but the engine will not start. Released the fuel pressure to see if fuel was getting in and there was pressure.


Try flooring the gas pedal when you go to start it (but quickly remove your foot on the pedal when the car starts).

That is just to clear the flooding (it's called clear flood mode when the accelerator is floored before the engine is on).

You need to replace your Engine Coolant Temp sensor. It is dumping too much fuel in your engine and not allowing it to start. The stock one is plastic and cracks. It then sends a signal to the PCM that the engine is -40F (that's negative 40 degrees F as in below zero). The PCM then tries to warm up the car by dumping fuel in it but since it isn't that cold it causes a problem.

Get a new brass one from AutoZone or the like and replace it. It's a 10 minute job and takes a 13MM deep well socket.

Problems accelerating


the engine tickover is too slow when the engine is cold its running on cold start, ie:choke,, after it warms up the engine slows down this is what is causing it to stall in gear,, get some one to hold the brakes hard on and with the engine running in gear ajust the tick over till its reving at 750 - 850 rpm the revs will go up a bit when its out of gear,, before you pick a gear to go into push the foot brake down to stop the car lurching,,,

I just bought a 2008 Sienna w/ 44,000 miles. When the engine is cold, doesn't have to be really cold, I hear this ticking noise (not loud) when engine is under slight acceleration between 1500- 2000 rpm....


Sounds like you are describing lifter noise. Go to the car store and buy a pint of Berrymen's Chemtool. Next time the engine is cold, pour the Chemtool into the engine oil. Do your normal driving for the next few days or weeks until you have 150-200 miles (none of them should be highway miles) on the engine, then have the oil changed. Drive for 2000-3000 miles, and do the same thing all over again. Repeat this a couple of times. If the lifter loosens up, your good to go. If it doesn't, then it will have to be repaired by tearing into the engine.

Engine is lacking fuel and can't accelerate when engine cold


Check the CHT sensor .Could be telling the ecu that the engine is warm and not cold.

Noisey injectors


im not entirely sure on injectors but i do know that engines need time to warm as the internal parts are made slightly smaller than they shud be to allow for heat expansion so when you start in a cold morning this could just be the case

I need to get a clear mental picture of what exactly is happening.

With this said, you stated that the car "runs fine" until warmed up.

Q: When you start the car when cold it idles fine?
Q: If you allow the car to idle until "fully" warmed does the car stall?
Q: As the car begins to warm up, Does the RPM fluctuate abnormally?
Q: Does the car Only stall when you press on the gas pedal or does it stall just sitting and idling in addition to pressing the gas pedal?
Q: If you can drive it while cold does the car stall during acceleration when warm or only at Stop Signs / Lights?
Q: If you wait 20min or so, can you start the car again?
Q: How many miles are on the car?

Ticking noise


A small exhaust leak can sound like a ticking noise during acceleration and can get better or worse as the system heats up. I had a similar problem when the engine was cold that was solved with a new exhaust manifold gasket.
