Power just fails, starts up fine, but when idling, sometimes just shuts down. Had the battery replaced about 1 1/2 years ago when this occurred before and seemed fine, but doing same thing again.

When you jump start are you putting earth to the body/chassis or to the battery??

Check the ICM. Idle control module. If the fuel pressure regulator was the problem, you'd have a hard start condition ans a lack of power.

Could be crankshaft sensor.

I went through this scenario while working in a toyota sienna a few months ago and it ended up being the battery. When battery supply voltage starts to drop the PCM will limit voltage to certain areas.

I am having a similar problem on a 2003 Volkswagon Passat 1.8L 4 cylinder manual engine. My batter (after 10 years of service) died about a month ago. When the engine is cold and I start it up the engine (if I do not carefully add gas to rev the engine) will idle at around 200 to 400 RPM and then stall. The problem does not occur after the engine has been going for more than about 90 seconds. No check engine light is on. Ideas anyone?

Check your wires coming to and from the battery and all the areas that you think are loosing power. IE the radio, the windows, the lights, and see if the current draw is what it should be, or are the wires shot.... Becuase if the wires going to the battery from the altinator arnt that great, it will charge sometimes, and only a little when it does. The wires from the battery to the fues box can also have the same issue.. just cause they look good on the out side, does not mean that they are not coroaded on the inside, causing a voltage drop, leading to lack of charging the car, or shutting off while its at idle.
