How do you change o2 sencer on 1999 intrepid

The 1999 Dodge Intrepid uses two oxygen sensors, one on each of the two exhaust manifolds. Determine which oxygen sensor is faulty before changing the sensors by having the computer in your Intrepid scanned for codes. Most major auto parts retailers will scan the computer free of charge on the hope that you will buy the parts needed from them. If you need to replace both of the oxygen sensors, the process is the same for both sides so you can just repeat it after the first one is complete.

  • 1

Raise the front of your Intrepid with a jack and support the car with a set of jack stands positioned under the frame. Remove the jack from under the car and out of the way for now.

  • 2

Locate the oxygen sensor from under the car. Looking up into the engine compartment--the sensor is on the outboard side of the exhaust manifold pointing out toward the fender. This location is the same for both oxygen sensors, just on opposite sides of the car.

  • 3

Locate the wiring harness connector by following the wiring pigtail from the sensor down the wires until you see the connector. Lift the locking tab slightly on the connector and separate the two halves of the connector. Lay the wires aside and return to the oxygen sensor.

  • 4

Turn the oxygen sensor counter-clockwise with an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet until it is loose, then remove it from the exhaust pipe. Discard the old sensor and thread the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand to start with. This will help avoid cross threading the sensor and exhaust pipe.

  • 5

Tighten the oxygen sensor to 20 ft.lbs. with a torque wrench and oxygen sensor socket. Plug the wiring pigtail from the new sensor into the wiring harness connector on the car. Push the two halves together until the locking tab engages and the halves are secure.

  • 6

Repeat the process for the other sensor if you are changing both. Raise the front of your Intrepid off the jack stands with a jack, remove the stands from under the car and lower the car to the ground.

    Intrepid transmission reset?

There is no such thing as a cheap and effective temporary fix. There might be an inexpensive fix that your local transmission shop may be aware of, but any repair that is effective is not going to be temporary, and most likely not cheap.

How do you know the Oxygen sensors are bad? Did some code-scanning, counterman at some parts store tell you that or have you had your oxygen sensors checked by a professional?
I will tell you that 90% of all the oxygen sensors sold did not need to be replaced. Oxygen sensors get a bad rap for anything it reports as a problem - like lean conditions or rich conditions, which are rarely ever caused by the oxygen sensor itself. It's kind-of like witnessing a robbery and you report it, so they arrest you for the robbery simply because you are the one that reported it.

    Location of oxygen sensor

There is only 4 sensors on a 2000 dodge intrepid and the bank 2 sensor 2 is the sensor located on the right (passenger) side and the one located after the catalytic converter (the one close to the firewall).

this is the code for catalytic convertor efficiency. if you decide to change the 02 sensor change both of the sensors for the left head...there is a good chance the convertor is going bad also depending on the miles

    Engine diagnostic codes

I don't have a dodge ram but the codes for the dodge vehicles where pretty much the same. For my intrepid the codes read for the following numbers

12 - Problem with battery connection (This usually happens if you disconnect the battery)
21 - Problem with the oxygen sensor circuit
52 - Oxygen Sensor signal input indicates rich mixture during engine operation.

It sounds like you may need to change an oxygen sensor. Hope this helps.

Check engine codes 95 dodge intrepid

Code 12 is: Direct battery input to PCM was disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles.

Code 21 is: Neither rich nor lean condition detected from the oxygen sensor input or oxygen sensor input voltage maintained above the normal operating range.
