Question about 2004 Dodge Intrepid

2004 Intrepid - car sputters and clatters when trying to start it. Ususally takes a second crank to start it. Still runs for another 10 seconds after turning off the engine also. What could it be?

I should have also said that once it starts, it runs and drives perfectly. If something were wrong with the timing, would I hear that when it was running?

This is Indicative of the Discription of the Engine JUMPING TIMING.
If your TUNE UP PARTS ARE FAIRLY NEW this IS What has Happened. BUT YOU MUST ELIMINATE Possible Failure of Parts Such as Spark Plugs & Wires , Coil Pack and Such

In this Case I Would Look Into Tuning up the Engine and Make it A Major Yuneup witch Includes ALL FILTERS. Your Problem Sounds Like Simply a Maintnence one Now with New Info You Included

Your timing is off. i would not drive that car. your running a risk of having alot of head issues. that will cost alot to fix.

well on the older cars you would but on these newer cars they adjust for alot. with it having a hard time starting like that i would guess that having your timing checked would be a very smart move.

Cavalier sputters

Randomly shuts off? The only "shutdown" for a car is the security system. I do not believe you have a shutdown for low oil pressure. I have seen cars shut down due to the gas cap being loose. I think you have had bad oil, even if you changed it, it could have varnished the hydraulic lifters which will give you the sputtering. This may be remedied with an anti-gumming agent. I know that the Dodge Intrepid (not your car- read on) had a poor design where the engine would gum up. Dodge makes an additive specifically for the oil of this engine that removes the gunk. This is what I would try. Other backyard methods like using diesel fuel do work and I have used them, but I DO NOT recommend this for you. Over the counter stuff at the department store may work, but I know that the Dodge stuff worked very well.

My 2003 CTS would not start on the first, second or third try after filling the gas tank. Finally after several months of this occuring every two weeks a check engine light came on. It was the evac purge valve. Tom

Car hesitates and sputters

It seems like you have a vacuum leak in a hose some where. Check under the hood for any rubber hoses that are dry-rotted, cracks, or sharp bends in any of them.
